I remember that at the time all this crap was still hot, fresh, and juicy, there were also Linda-haters out there.
And then there were those who hated both of those women!
I have no idea why Yoko was on hand so often. Well, I do have a bit of an idea... I'm pretty sure I saw John Lennon defending her and saying that he wanted her around.
That's why there are so many photos of Yoko Ono with all four Beatles... far more than what one finds while searching for photos of Linda with the four.
Not that I'm "defending" Yoko Ono per se... just admitting that really, I don't know what happened all that much. All four of the Beatles have said repeatedly that the group was already doomed by the time she showed up anyway.
That last album of Lennon's, "Double Fantasy", kind of told a tale. You guys surely remember how the early releases by the Plastic Ono Band were all Lennon on one side, and Yoko's gibberish on the flip side... right?
Well, while mastering "Double Fantasy", John sandwiched Yoko's material in there... every other song was a Yoko Special, which really sucked, because she sucked... which meant that you had to keep getting up to skip the song if you were listening to the album on vinyl, because she was essentially not listenable to begin with.
John Lennon did that to make us listen to her horseshit-- if only once. That was his brainchild, along with creating songs and arrangements for her that were at least sort of poppish instead of the usual cacophonous gobbledegook. It apparently caught up to him that not everybody liked Revolution 9... and Yoko was even less tolerable than Lennon's own adventure into abstract recordings happened to be.
So, even then-- just one month before his death-- Lennon was still more or less shoving Yoko in everyone's face, whether they liked it (or her) or not.
Sometimes I wonder if Lennon himself didn't unwittingly instigate a lot of animosity against his own dour goddess, right there...
Never could stand her material. She sang a song called "Moving On" on that Double Fantasy album that just... sucked. So right when you were sitting there realizing that it was almost over, she started her monkey chattering routine. Ugh.
After that I only listened to what little I liked on Double Fantasy when I knew I'd be in a position to skip all the Yoko material without it being a pain in the neck. For instance, I'd never put that album on if I were, say, painting the ceiling and would have to come down off the ladder just to avoid having to listen to her.
There was one time when I was amused by Yoko Ono, however... though it didn't have so much to do with any of her artistic efforts and was instead something she did while feuding with John over some unknown matter...
They were fighting when either his birthday or Christmas rolled around (can't remember which). But anyway, she handed him a gift-wrapped box. He opened it and found a set of small bathroom towels-- the decorative kind that you hang next to one another as a matched set.
The towels were embroidered. One of them featured the word, "You", and the other had the word "Prick"....
God, I loved that!
