People are long past losing perspective on this run of the mill virus. Yes, it has some interesting attributes (probably engineered in by the Chocoms), but it is not, repeat, not a big deal. More people in the USA probably die from auto-erotic asphyxiation in a year than this virus.

Two of my kids are traveling for Spring break, next week (one skiing out west, the other going to Caribbean). I am probably going to Vegas (not my favorite city). On the upside, I can do a round trip to Vegas, staying in a 4+ star hotel for 3/4 nights for under $300. So, that should free up another $700 for the T&A expenditures...

The problem is that even if the virus WAS a run of the mill virus the same as the regular flu, it's not, but even if it was, it has WIDE OPEN transmission paths.

But it's not the same as the flu, it's worse. And the transmission paths are still far more wide open.

I would take a look at what's happening in China, South Korea, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, etc., as a guide for what is coming to North America.

It's not the end of the world (apart from for those who die from it!) but it's a significant deal.

My journal, after the apocalypse.

Day 1:

-I just learned of the apocalypse this evening via reliable sources (FB) this evening.

- I don't dare go out for fear of being consumed by blood-thirsty zombies

-I have inventoried my wares and I am kind of up sh*t's creek. I have some booze, some Chinese take out and various other items.

-After calming myself, I totally freaked when I discovered that I only have two rolls of toilet paper. I immediately knew that within a couple of weeks, I'd be wiping with my bare hand.

-I have taken a couple curtain rods and fashioned them into spears for battle with the zombies, when I emerge. I will also take my ceremonial ninja sword (that will probably break upon the first zombie I strike).

-Thank God, I have my brown, felt sheriff's hat. If anything will see me through this crisis, it is this f*cking hat. I am much more on the ball when my f*cking head is sweating like a pig.

-I have sharpened my hunting knives to razor sharp so that I can remove the faces of zombies and use them as masks to walk amongst them, unmolested.

-I will make my first foray into this new post-apocalyptic world, in the morning. I will focus my activities on gathering the bare essentials: coffee, booze, steak and cigarettes (what, if the world is ending why not smoke 'em if you got 'em?).

-Well, I don't want to use up all of the electricity coming out of the wall...so, I will sign off here. I will report back, tomorrow.

Not to rain on anybody's end of the world scenario but that data from South Korea shows similar distributions as China and Italy. Give or take 10 years of age.

I do have some skin in that game as my 86 year old dad works in a local hospital.

Time to retire maybe?

Fat chance. He's stuborn. Anyway they've taken really good care of him including a stroke he had at work. The staff is trained to keep an eye on the 60 grey jackets and one of them noticed dad not his normal self and had him getting treated in literally under 10 minutes.
Membership has It’s advantages. Good health to him.

Help me understand this... ban on travel (flights) from the EU to the US.... OK, got it. Travel (flights) from UK to US is allowed... OK, got it.

So, I get on a plane in <somewhere in the EU> and fly to the UK, then fly to the US, from the UK.

WTF am I missing?

Trying to make sense of any of that? Anyone’s guess. Good luck figuring it out, I was equally confused!

I suspect you will have to verify you haven’t visited any EU countries in the past X days. Certainly passport stamps won’t help for most cases, this will be the honour system?

I believe that this is actually why the WHO recommends against closed borders, because trying to have people be honest about travel might allow them to be more honest about symptoms too. Rather than have them lie about travel and then admit symptoms.

I actually don’t disagree with either approach, both have their merits IMO. I’m glad to see the US taking positive action.
