I mean the real issue here is that Gibson insists on making everything with a Gibson name in the US. Which is great, but then you have these issues where the lower price point can't compete with the likes of PRS who are making some really great guitars in Korea.

That doesn't account for the made-in-USA PRS S2 line, nor the fact that Cali-built Fenders still kick Gibson's ass on price.

I for one still really like my Epi les paul, but I'm sure it's not as nice as an SE and the price difference is only like $200.

That is actually one thing I really like about Gibson. If it says Gibson, its USA made. Not like Fender, where they come from everywhere. I mean its not like they are bad guitars, but isn't that what Squier was for originally ?

I remember when I bought my 61 or 62 Gibson SG Les Paul Standard in Nov. 61 for $300 plus $50 for the HSC.

When we talk about prices on USA built guitars, we shouldn't forget about Kiesel/Carvin. They offer a few instruments below $1000 as I can recall. And they are damn good guitars -- especially for players who have a "made in USA" complex.

really good point, I think this is why Gibson has come out with all of the cheaper Les Pauls over the past few years (i.e., the classic and the faded and all that) but I'm sorry those just don't compare to say, an iconic american strat, or an amazing flamed top PRS for $1,200! I mean, you don't get a flame on a gibson until you are into the $2000 range!

If I am not mistaken, the flame tops on the PRS SE and S2 models are veneers. I know they are on the SE. I don't know about the $2000 Gibsons. Are the caps solid flame or veneers?

Thanks for the information. I knew the SE also had a full maple top, but the flamed part is a veneer.

it can be a preference and not a complex.

I prefer Asian, I'll still date Brunette. :D

what's really amusing are the ones bitching about Gibson but then talk about how they drive insanely priced luxury cars. Paying $2200 for a guitar that will last 50 years is just insane! But buying some over hyped European POS that's so over engineered that only a dealer can change the oil ? Fvck yes! So what if it won't last five years? Money well spent, peasants!

Slash will save Gibson.
Slash could probably buy Gibson. :laugh2:

Slash doesn't need the pressure and aggravation, he's well off already. Maybe the best thing to happen would be for the employees themselves to pool their money and buy out Henry.

You mean people don't want to pay $3k for mass produced guitars where every third one has issues and shoddy craftsmanship or pay $8k+ for a mostly hand made guitar?

Weird.

You said exactly what I was thinking - quality control is pretty much gone.

Go back to building quality instruments without the latest gimmick attached to it. I don't need an auto-tuner any more than I need an auto-pick.
