Looks like the Studio is going to come with a bound neck this year as well...

but imo it looked a lot better when it wasn't missing the inlays, poker chip, and pup covers. This 2017 one looks like they've made it cheaper looking. Booo!

gibson-les-paul-studio-satin_8.jpg

see? Looked better in 2012.

Then I think in 2013 they made the neck maple,..then they made the pickups look like all black EMG wanna-be pickups,..every year they cheapen it.

I still want a 2012.

I don't like the look of that 2017 at all actually. No poker chip and dot inlays? When what they made in 2012 was so much nicer? It's just obvious they're cheapening the guitar year after year.

..what a BS move,..that's annoying.

I swear every time I stick up a little for Gibson I get b*tch-slapped by them. :laugh2:

I still want a 2012, that's a sweet guitar. Fck that 2017 cheap-ass sht. :laugh2: Henry saving a couple bucks by taking away the inlays, covers, and poker chip. What a btchy little douche move.

Yeah, I knew what you were talking about, but I just thought it was cool that they're throwing binding on the 18' studios.

And I agree about the worn 17's, they don't look as nice as the older ones. They are glossy now though.

meh, the Worn-Satin finish is what was cool about them.

That is cool they added binding to the Studios. But at $1,500. the Studios aren't the deal they once were.

Played one of these at a bud's shop a year or so ago and I thought it one of the best playing/sounding guitars I've played... Great instrument... Incredible neck....

Didn't buy it, wifey was with me...and I had just bought a gold anni Strat....

I have one and don't feel that way at all. It's just like this, love it.

Nice Vela. It's all the luck of the drawer and my S2 is first gen so hopefully they got the crappy electronics worked out. I talked with other first gen owners and they had the same problems with pots going bad. I fixed that, all my pots and switches are now PRS spec and not the outsourced stuff.

A ZM is on my list. I just need to justify it.

Personally, I don't care where a guitar is made. A good guitar is a good guitar regardless of origin. And many guitar players today share that same mindset.

Very true, regardless of what Yngwie might say.:p Charvel/Gibson/Epi/Fender/ Ibanez/PRS/Etc, all still good guitars.

$800. gets you a MIA Les Paul, brand new. It just doesn't have binding.

You can get an MIA Les Paul for a good/decent price. Just not a shiny, flame-maple topped, fully bound one.

and used those ones go for I'm guessing probably around $600. Higher end Epiphones cost more than that.

I demoed a faded Brown Studio in the store in 2012 and I loved it, and still want one. It was a fine guitar that played and sounded like a Les Paul. And it looked all rugged and cool.

Matter of fact Olds442 (mlp member) was in the store that day too. :thumb: I bought a (shtty) amp,..I should've bought that guitar I still think about. :laugh2:

Binding isn't all it doesn't have. They're not even painted! Real Studios (an MIA LP w/out binding) are over $1300 now!

Honestly, the sub-$1000 Gibsons are abysmal. There are dozens of superior options out there for $500.

I wouldn't say Abysmal at all. Not fancy? Sure. But not Abysmal.

I played a Faded Studio in 2012 that I still think about. Playability and Sound trump looks 100% of the time.

...plus that whole 'Beauty in the eye of the beholder' thing. I think the faded worn look of the brown Studio is really cool. It's very rustic and reminds me of Telecasters in a way. Because it's not trying to be fancy it's just a decent guitar that plays and sounds good.

I mean once you go down the "Real" rabbit hole it never ends. Real Studios,..Real Les Pauls,...etc. Then you start sniffing cork. The Standard or Traditional is better than Studio, USA is better then Epi, Custom Shop is better than USA, Vintage is better than Custom Shop.....it all starts to get silly.

A good guitar is a good guitar. You can't tell on a recording what a guitar looks like anyway,..which is exactly why they're called Studio models in the first place. They're just supposed to sound and feel good, which they do.

I like Les Pauls from the lowest to the highest I guess. Judging them personally on their own merits.

...that said I saw the 2017 faded Studios yesterday and don't like how they look. :laugh2: Mmm,..this is good cork. :laugh2:

If a plain jane guitar(like my mim tele) is an outstanding player, i'll take it any day over a more costly instrument.Ditto for a nice Gibson studio.

I take that mim Tele everywhere. It gets thrown around, in a rather nice retro softcase(1994, triangle heavy duty). I recently got home after a week away, mim Tele in tow.I played it for hours,on the weekend. I have upgraded the bridge and tuners(gotoh vintage repros, nickel, locking/6 saddle nickel gotoh bridge). Damn its so stable,in perfect tune, last night after getting home and plugging into a half-stack.Perfectly musical.Fully expected it to be *out*. Great guitars don't have to be expensive, in my limited experience.

I hear ya Mal, and respect your opinion, but I really felt that the faded studios that I've played were not decent guitars that play and sound good.

I think I would call them sh!tty guitars that played terrible, and sounded OK.

I liken those guitars to Chevettes. Some people bought them because, well, Chevy. But, do you think Chevy bothered to make those cars as well as Corvettes? They did not. Do you still see any on the road today, or even in the last 20yrs? No, you do not.

I'm sure you can make one of those Tribute Studios a killer guitar with a bit of coin & elbow grease, after all, modern CNC based manufacturing processes have significantly raised the bottom of the barrel. But they really should be $300.

well honestly I'm judging them by the ones I played 5 years ago that had mahogany necks and burstbucker pickups. They were (minus binding and gloss),...regular Les Pauls for the most part.

They would probably be better appreciated around the $500 mark new, instead of $700-$800.

I agree the studios and traditionals are great guitars but the fact is they have no maple tops, no flames, no binding. If they had redistributed some of their funds into finding a way to get a nice maple flame top on a $1k guitar then they might of seen more success these past 10 years.

Mal.

Please realize that some of us PREFER poly finish, if it is thin and well done, as it is on PRS SE and S2 models. Certainly, some players prefer lacquer, but many do not.

I've played Studios that were badass.... We sold some when they first came out way back....
I've a '12 I think Goldie Tribute with minis... Plays/sounds like an old Deluxe.... Like it just as much as my old ass Custom. Did I work on the frets/board? Yep. I do on every guitar I buy. Non issue. It actually played very well from factory though...

I have played some faded Studios. Only downside to me is the same downside as most not high dollar guitars, factory kinda sorta setup which is not an issue as most guitars are not set up well from factory to MY tastes/standards...

I don't expect ANY new guitar to play like I likey likey. NONE. So that is a non-issue.

I know that with just a bit of work, I can make a Studio play like dream for ME, just like any other guitar if the neck is okey dokey... They don't evidently take the time with a Studio they do with the high dollar guitars... So.... Wouldn't expect them to. Man-hours are expensive. Are they badly made or cheap junk? Nawt.
