Trying to authenticate (or declare fake) vintage Les Paul's from an Instagram photo likely taken with an iPhone is a bad idea.

But it makes for interesting forum posts.

Well, that's exactly what was used to declare the Burst they were selling as real last year a fake. I don't really think what the photos were taken on matters when it's evidently a fake.

I'd leave the mundane task of saving the world from fake vintage Les Pauls to the good folks over at the LPF, they're better at it, thread-trainwrecks and all.
Instead why don't we discuss these outing of these guitars as it relates to Schrödinger's cat?:thumb:

Given how badly Capsule performed during the prior Burst fiasco, you would think they would not promote that type of ambiguous hyperbole.

The story was that Geddy Lee or Alex Lifeson purchased the fake Burst and after a couple of massive threads erupted (along with subsequent expert opinions) depicting the various things that made it a blunt fake it was returned. Here's the craziest part: apparently the original owner, some wealthy businessman from Germany, was thrilled to learn of his old guitars whereabouts and was more than happy to pay asking, which was, IIRC, $240k. Gets crazier still... Apparently a week after the whole fugazi fiasco a "real" Burst walks in, which Geddy Lee or Alex Lifeson end up somehow snagging, despite Capsule's 'little mistake' the week prior. Needless to say the shop made a very tidy commission that week.

Curious who's the source of this German businessman story? So allegedly Capsule and he both willingly agreed to a sale at the original price after this was publicly outed?

I'm hesitant making comments on authenticity esp. with pics like these, but agree that at least a couple of those guitars look quite wrong..

When we talk about 'a fool and his money' scenario......well yes it's alive and well in the world for sure....here in status symbol land.
A case in point is a guy I sold my '03 braz R0 to a year ago on our NZ auction site. He's a successful businessman who travels the globe and has a few Historics he told me.
A week after I'd handed the R0 over to him he emailed me saying that it wasn't a braz LP. So naturally I emailed him back with all the proof etc which put him at ease.
A lot of people don't know and don't do the homework.....what a luxury:hmm::laugh2:

They've posted about the guitar on the far left in the photo; it's a '52 conversion. $25k CDN/$19,733 USD seems fair for that, though after my experience I'd still question some things.

Link w/ photos: 1952 Les Paul Conversion

7lbs... seems like we have a contender for worlds lightest Les Paul. Maybe part of the conversion included chambering haha.

Eager to get the scoop on the other two Bursts.

Once they know they are being discussed on the forums again, they might come clean.

Without any proper documentation, it can be a conversion from anything...

Wonder why that conversion has the wrong inlays. With so much having been changed already, who knows. Could even be a new neck or board.

I struggle with the notion of a 're-topped' guitar being considered genuine vintage any longer or that the value should be equal to or greater than an off-center seam conversion. seems to me it should be more appropriately called a 'player grade' conversion and sell for <=$10k.

Do the aesthetics really trump all else? Seems someone must be buying them at these price, but why?

Wrong inlays for a '59, not a '52. Earlier were swirlier, but I'd want to see the guitar in person or in better pictures before committing to an opinion.

I've heard tell of really light (sub 8lb) Gold Top Les Pauls, but low 7s is lightest I've heard of. My big worry if I were going for this guitar would be whether the pickups were genuine. If they are, then it doesn't look too bad a deal if you're in the market for a conversion. You'd likely struggle to get one done for a lot less. Can't say I like the top, finish or fading that much though.

Capsule makes their own brand of Fender guitar look-a-likes, so making their own Gibson guitar look-a-likes might not be a bad business proposition... but then again who is to say that they don't do that already...

Here's one of the other ones Capsule Music

I've never bought anything from the shop but they were always really friendly when I used to visit the shop on Queen street. I visit the retail list everyday as there are always interesting guitars showing up all the time.

Not trying to defend anyone, or judge authenticity, I certainly don't know.....but did they ever even claim to own or be offering for sale ALL of those guitars? I heard the GT was offered, but the others could all be privately owned and screwed with and still "technically" be 50s guitars. Think of them as less famous, extensively altared fashion models to help sell the GT? I dunno.

And I think Schrödinger just hated cats.
