Sounds like somebody who doesn't know how those finishes were done. This would not get you a proper looking result, as the majority of the cherry color is from the grain filler. Also, you lose so much finish in the spray, that you wouldn't have enough to cover the neck.

I'm totally ignorant as far as this stuff goes but even if it did work with the original finish I see no advantage because the re-neck/ refin of the neck took place in the mid 70s and I'd venture to say that the lacquer used was identical (or close enough) to what Gibson used in 1960. And that's the point, IMO. A guitar restoration should bring the guitar back to as close as possible to when it was all intact (not as it was leaving the factory necessarily but that'd be okay too, if so desired) and what HM did with this guitar fits that requirement. They used materials and finishes as close to spec as possible and that's as good as it gets. Trying to fit another Les Paul neck would be cool if it could be done in a manner that looks 100% correct and the pricetag wouldn't be ridiculous but what we have here is still a perfectly restored guitar and the furthest thing from "1/2 a Burst" (I don't even know what that's supposed to be, are Stradivarius violins 1/2 strads only because they have been re-necked?)
