Hello all,
I was woundering what you think of the Gibson SG Special. Ive been finding them very cheap lateley. Being a 12 year old kid yet a good guitarist, its the only gibson i can afford. I no that if Sin comes by he will say i should. haha. LOL. anyway...just wanted some opinions on this guitar.

Definitely not. Save up for an SG Standard instead. OR, get an Epiphone Elitist SG.

are the specials any good?

They are good if you are on a very tight budget. But it's better to get them used so as not to worry about resale value, if you decide to get rid of it later. And there are a lot of them out there so finding a good deal is easy. Specials are also not too good because AFAIK, they use multiple pieces of wood for the body. 3 - 5 pieces of scrap mahogany.

5 piece standards are just as common.

I have a 2 piece Special Faded and its a great guitar for the money. It plays well and I grabbed new pickups, hardware and wiring for it and it sounds great. Just make sure you try it first.

Edit: Multiple pieced bodies don't necessarily make a guitar sound bad, or cheap. There are lots of multiple pieced bodied guitars that sound great, so don't let that effect how you feel about a guitar.

definitely worth at least looking at one. mine's a 2 piece as well. sure it doesn't have trapezoid inlays or "better" pickups, and some people might hate the finish, but it works for me:

Sg Elitists are much better if you can find them. They are rather rare. There are only 4 of them on this forum lol. Was only 1 untill a week ago.

I had a faded Special and it was a great guitar.

I was looking into something the other day, and wound up doing a search for COMPLETED listings on ebay. There were nine faded SGs that sold in the last couple of weeks for $499 and under!!! There were also a few more under that price that received zero bids. That means the opening bid of $400 would have won it.

Guys can talk about the worn finish and 5 piece body all they want, but for that kind of money you couldn't steal an Epiphone, then put Gibson pickups and hardware on it. Bottom line is you get a instrument made in the USA, with top quality electronics, pickups and hardware (not to mention the nut, fret work, etc.). Also if you go spend $400 on that Epi, good luck selling it for $250. If you spend $500 on a Gibson, on a good day you could make money on it.
