You're 100% right. I thought the Riggs clip sounded a little closer to a Sibly or JTM, with perhaps a tad more chime. Plus, the Horton listed on the Phaez site is 40 Watts, and IMHO, anything "Hiwatt" has to have lots of headroom and plenty o' loud. That's the point :dude:

It's the Horton I'd be interested in checking out for sure.

I may need to talk to Randy and see what he suggests, he was good enough to check out my band's album so maybe he can offer some insight.

Thanks, EX . . .

I'll be interested to hear what he has to say. I'm a tad on the fence because I already have a couple of Hiwatts (but they're both louder than stink). But like I said, the idea of cashing in some equity in my 5150 or Orange Rocker 30 for a "Randy Hiwatt" seems like it's worth some serious thought.

Thx!

Thought I'd ask this question here before putting it out on the amp forum...

Do any of you know what might be causing my speakers to have a low frequency "flutter" when I'm using my Duophonic head?
My speaker cab sounds fine with any other amp head. But when I plug the Duophonic in I get the flutter sound that almost sounds like a speaker starting to go bad.

^^^ Wot ANEAS said ^^^

Unplug the guitar and crank the amp full with the speaker cab plugged in. Use the rubber end of a pencil to lightly tap the tubes. If you hear a crackle, howl, whine, super-loud pop or other nastiness, it'll be that tube (I find the pencil test works better for preamp and PI tubes than power tubes, but you should still be able to get an idea). The tube in V1 will always make some noise, but it should be more like a firm "clunk" or "ting" . . . not anything ugly. I've got a box full of tubes I wouldn't use in V1, but are probably perfectly fine for other slots . . . V1 is a common culprit (V1 will be the closest socket to the primary guitar input).

Also, make sure the tubes are seated firmly (but make sure they're not hot if you touch 'em).

Just my non-professional suggestion in case you don't have spare tubes lying around.

Just out of curiosity does anyone else run a SIBLY or any other Phaez through Vintage 30s? It's funny I've tried it before though the 2x12 that came with my Bassman and I never thought it sounded that good, too midrangy, but I tried it again today, adjusted the boost and the mid a bit and sounded pretty killer. I've changed the power tubes since the last time but that's the only thing that's different as far as I can tell. Weird.

Yup . . . V-30's pretty well all around here. Use 1x12s and 2x12s with a Winona (DC + Corona) and a JTM18. Everyone has their preferences, but they work 100% for me. Have Creambacks, Scumbacks, various others . . . but the V-30s are ideal, IMHO. Eminence Delta 12-A's are a close second for the Phaez stuff (again, IMHO), and especially for a Sib I used to have . . . tamed the mids quite well.

Hey guys, my JTM 18 just released the magic smoke. No reason? I played it yesterday and powers down like normal. Today I flip it on, and no sound, then I see it.
The big transformer is hot. Nothing else. Any clues?
I love this amp to death. Omg I'm freaking out! Lol.
I know it's tech time. I got it used and it has worked flawless for me until today. Amp was made in 2011.

Anyone with suggestions? What went wrong?
It smells bad! Like the transformer cooked.

4X12 cabs can be nice and punchy!! Matty, any updates on the Scumback PVC speaker and the DC10?

Wyattsgroove, amp tech and repair is not my area of knowledge,
but I'm wishing you and your amp well...

I met another Phaez owner in Chicago, and there are a few MLP Phaez owners
in Portland I'll be meeting this summer and/or fall.

Looks like my next Phaez will be a monster 4 channel rackmount like CCSaints' amp.

I haven't tried it with the DC10 yet but with the SIBLY it's just glorious, so good I want a couple for my 2x12. Or an M & J PVC mix. :naughty:

Rather than send you a PM Matty, what makes the PVC voice coil different and or special tone wise?
