I have a 2014 R8 and am wondering if the nitro finish will harden faster if the guitar sits out rather than being in the case?

My guess is no...but thought I'd ask.

If you have a safe place to keep your guitar out of the case why not try? I have a 2013 SG VOS that was pretty sticky. I left it out of the case for a month. It's much better now, but I also played it exclusively during that time. Outside or playing or combination- who knows?

Yea, it will only take 40 years, rather than 50 if kept in the case.

(it doesn't matter, there is so much plasticizer in the 'nitro', it will never really harden)

I bought a 2014 R8 in May.

I keep all of my guitars in hangers on the wall in my music room.

It had the rubbery, sticky feel at first.

But after a few weeks of hanging out of its' case, it feels slick and glassy.

I have also played the sh!t out of it, and the treble side has totally bled into the binding, and a few spots on the bass side, where my thumb wraps around the neck.

Ymmv.....

A paint coating, regardless of what it is, undergoes "outgassing" for a period of time after being applied; i.e. the volatiles slowly leave the coating over a period of time subject to their molecular weight or in simple terms volatility.

Stored in a confined space with no air movement this will take longer, stored in the open with more air movement, it will be faster.

I'd also think that the action of light, UV & oxygen in the air would also have some impact over time if left in the open................particularly UV.

The issue with current Gibson Nitro is that the formulation is geared more towards ease of use in mass production vs. the old formulations of the '50's which had less rheological agents added; e.g. plasticizer etc.

no

7 day cure for solvent based coatings and 30 day cure for waterborne coatings with some exceptions being faster cure times of each type.

Let it bake in the sun for an hour or so a day on and off for a month. That'll do it.

This has been my experience as well.

Got my 2013 R8 in June of 2013 and it's been on a stand in my living room every day since.

I can definately say the nitro is harder and more glass-like than when it was new.

The top also has around 20 hours (spread out over several weeks) in intense direct sunlight (fretboard completely covered) and I feel that has helped.

...which really somewhat negates one of the key reasons nitro is preferred in the first place....

My belief system says yes. While they're still minty fresh being sure your hands are really clean can help keep things from getting tacky, along with wiping down the neck and some occasional Virtuoso cleaner.

It gets harder/better fairly fast and continues to improve over the years.
