I already posted a NGD about this guitar, but it is still within 24 hours ;)

i do have a few questions about my new Special though. According to the (valid gibson) serial number, it has a build date of 12/2010. It also seems to deviate from the Junior Special that was on the Gibson website a bit.

1.) I am almost 100% sure that the fretboard is rosewood rather than baked maple. It definitely has a "grainy" texture like my Traditional and Stratocaster.
2.) The color is MUCH darker than a standard heritage cherry. In some lighting, it is almost black.
3.) It is a glossy finish, but seems to be very thin. I can see lots of mahogany texture in the finish.
4.) It has a blank truss rod cover.

It also seems to have a higher level of fit and finish to some of the other Specials i have seen. Any ideas?

Regardless, it sounds AMAZING! P-90's are the stuff for sure :dude:

Sorry, forgot to post photos. It's definitely darker in person than shown here... more of an oxblood.
also, the "standard" truss rod cover was not the original... the original is just blank.

Looks like rosewood to me but I'm no expert. Mine from 11 or 12 (now I can't remember) has Maple which has no streaking or pores.

Here's what an oiled baked maple board looks like... pretty close to rosewood. This was on my old SG MM.

It looks like a Junior/Special from a couple years back, but one of the Japan models cuz it has neck binding. I had one in TV yellow w/o neck binding for the U.S. And that's a rosewood fb. Take off the Standard trc and change the tuners to bean style, and you're good to go.

it currently has a blank trc, like in the guitar center ad. i've never had problems with the stock tuners (my traditional has the same ones), so i'm planning on keeping them.

yup! that's mine. the color is also MUCH darker than the "standard" junior specials that were more recent. i may be wrong about the fit and finish being better, but it sure seems to have had more attention to detail than the other ones i played @ guitar center last year...

Those GC-Exclusive Specials had a tummy cut like this:

I'm gonna confuse things for you, (and I!), all over again.

If you think you have the model from the GC add, look again, your controls have chrome centres and GC's does not.

Mine is the exact model from your Gibson link and it has the tummy cut but, like yours, it came with a blank truss rod cover, (unlike in the Gibson add), although it doesn't have the chrome control centres.

Mine is indeed also a very very dark cherry colour and it too is described as Vintage Cherry and it has a baked maple board which is grainy in a nice way and looks sweet when oiled. AFAIK, I have a 2012 model year guitar manufactured in late 2011 and purchased new in March 2012.

I hope that helps but I guess it wont. In any event, just like you, I'm loving mine too!!!!!!

I should have pointed out that the chrome center knobs (and pointers) were added onto the guitar. I have the original black knobs also.

awesome guitar regardless!
