I really thought they were an urban myth :) but there it was AND right in the next room was a BLACK Martin!!!

So, how common are 12 string LP's?

They were very rare until about 6-8 months ago.

I have a black trad 12 string like this one:

Not too long ago Gibson brought out a 12 string Traditional model. They also have a 12 string SG, and there's always the awesome EDS-1275...

The black Martin might be a Johnny Cash signature model.

Yeah, I think I saw your post on it and asked about converting it.

The neck is the same width as a standard LP according to the salesman, so a cheap bridge, TP and nut could make it a 6 string... it would look weird but it could be done in a way to make it back into a 12 string easily enough.

Anyway, even if the neck were wider than a LP that could be a good thing for some with stubby fingers :)

They're cool but I'd rather have a nine string.

I was thinking about that
But a few said that the neck would have been wider
and that's why I passed,thought I could have converted it into a 6 string guitar.....JT

I seriously wanted one. I had (just about) the money (they were around $1800 if I remember correctly). Then I thought that in reality,I'd probably play it solid for about a week or so, find some excuse to take it to two gigs, slowly transition back to six strings and, within the span of six weeks, put it back in the case for long months on end.

I couldn't justify the cost.

I think tuning a 12 string Les Paul is probably one of the most annoying guitar related things I could ever imagine doing. Even my regular 6 stringers get me to "put this plank through the nearest wall and be done with it" territory every once in awhile.

ugh that headstock - not as bad as a fender 12 string though.

if they had copied the rickenbacker style with stacked tuners it would have worked much better imo.

I tried to buy a 12-st Les Paul Goldtop on TGP two weeks ago. He got $1500 for it on eBay.

I had one NOT made by Gibson around 2011 that I painted and later converted to a 6 string.

Later this year I am planning to purchase a custom-made 12 string LP with Bigsby vibrato tailpiece installed. Any suggestions for other options?

Add a 3rd pup...
Charlies in Dallas has a luthier(Bryant) who can route it without even smudging the paint for $75
Amazing craftsmanship

Those of us suffering from that affliction prefer the term "hot dog digits". :thumb:

OP, the black Martin may have been a Johnny Cash model.
