Saw this on FleaBay today.

Gibson Les Paul Ace Frehley OWNED Guitar - eBay (item 290285974010 end time Jan-05-09 19:11:48 PST)

This guy claims he has a guitar that Ace owned, and that he aquired it throught one of Ace's "family members."

I looked through his feedback and it looks like he has sold a few other guitars, with one buyer making a reference to ACE. Of course you can't look up old ebay auctions to see the item.

I wonder if this guy is autographing them himself and passing them off as Aces'. Or is Ace now doing what ex baseball players do and autograph hundereds or thousands of items each year for $$$?

Is there a way to contact Gibson and check the serial number to see who originally purchased the guitar? If Ace really owned it, woudn't Gibson just have given it to him?

I'm trying to wrap my head around why Ace would sign his own guitar.

First of all COA are a dime a dozen, you can buy them online. Second that is supposedly from the author of the book, handwritten by her.

If it is his guitar that means her hooter were on it.

That guitar sold, and it is a real Ace owned guitar. I know the owner. And I also know the Ace family member he is referring to in the auction. The seller has a lot of Ace stuff. He has several of the coveted Ace Frehley Custom Shop guitars (only 300 made). Ace owned the guitar, played it, and the guitar is documented in the book. Ace gave away a lot of guitars over the years and pawned a bunch too. I believe that particular guitar is a 1990s production model (not one of the 300) that was given to Ace's relative as a gift. Ace would typically autograph one of his guitars when he gave them away in the past; don't know if he will still do that.

I don't know which is cooler - that Ace owned it, or that hottie chick's hooters all over it...

Thanks, Jimmy...any inside knowledge of why it went down from $18K?

Ace has been known to hit quite a few pawn shops and guitar shops on tour, especially in the early days. That's how he got his first burst...M

Well, thats just the thing. Regardless of "who knows who", there is absolutely no way to verify that Ace actually owned it. Just like autographs on ebay. Experts say that 60% of all autographs on ebay are fakes.

Unless GIBSON can verify via the serial number that they gave the guitar to Ace, its just a run of the mill LP just like everyone on these message boards owns. I would buy it at normal LP prices, but it simply wouldn't be prudent to pay a premuim for a guitar like that on ebay.

If you think it is, then I might have a few hundred guitars to sell you--- all autographed by Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, and SRV.

Ask for the sky & hope for a minimum? I think he was not sure he wanted to sell it, thus the high price at first. Then he found something he wanted more than that guitar & lowered the price with a best offer option. The price he got is not bad for an Ace owned & documented guitar. Probably good for him as well as the buyer.

I have to disagree. In this case, the seller is a known Ace collector. If you need verification, ask John Tate, the owner of the Ace Frehley web site

Ace Frehley Les Paul

In fact, that pic of 5 Ace custom shop guitars on the intro page to John's site is an old pic of the seller's 5 Ace guitars that he used to own. I think he only owns 2 of those now, and has sold 3 of them, but has acquired some others. The point is, this seller knows John. And this seller knows Ace's relative, as do I. That relative has a certain reputation for having owned a lot of Ace stuff. He and Ace grew up together. In fact, I'll bet that if we were talking about a large sum of money, the seller might even be willing to let a serious buyer contact Ace's relative for verification; but that could depend on Ace's relative. In many cases, there are a lot of fakes. But in this case, there are references to prove this is authentic.

No disrespect, and my intention is not to argue with you. But I respectfully do not share your opinion.

Regardless of who is the reference that claims they know Ace and how they got the guitar, the ONLY two people that can verify it is GIBSON or ACE himself. Everything else, as they say in court, is simply heresay, and nothing more.

People on the internet have produced much more elaborate stories for far less sums of money in order to defraud people out of their money.

Again, I do not wish to start an argument, and I hope the guitar was legit, but without verification from Gibson or Ace, that guitar is only worth regular LP prices. (IMHO)

Don't get me wrong, I would love to own an Ace owned and autographed axe!

The seller has purchased a couple of Ace owned guitars directly from Ace's relative. And for verification, that relative provided the COA and offered to confirm the guitar's authenticity to a potential buyer. Seems like that should be enough. When you see a pic of Ace holding the guitar or playing it in concert, that is a pretty good sign it is genuine! And he has had that kind of documentation on Ace owned guitars as well. For some reason, I don't see Ace's relative going around selling fake Ace guitars.

No disrespect, but I have been around the block a few times, and it has been my experience that anytime someone is trying to get me to part with my money -- that person is not telling the truth. And the "not telling the truth" part tends to get much, much more elaborate when the amount of money in question is large.

Do you remember when Britney Spears cut off all her hair a while back. The next day there were HUNDREDS of people selling locks of her hair on ebay, with every single one of the people swearing up and down that it was really her hair because......(INSERT LIES HERE).

Lets say they guy didn't autograph it himself. For all we know the guy could have had Ace autograph the guitar at a guitar show or after a gig.

Again, unless GIBSON can confirm with the serial number that they in fact gave the guitar to ACE, --- it's just an average, ordinary LP, no different from the LPs people on this forum have.

Maybe some of you feel comfortable parting with your money to buy a story and a guitar, but I don't.
