The parallel has always been made how Page relates art with music. Light and shade were often art references. With .08's I think the players touch has alot to do with exploiting the benefits of light gauge strings. Guys with heavy right hands would have a hard time liking them. On one hand, Page's picking style is very light and deft, like brush strokes. On the other hand, Billie Joe Armstrong looks like he's desperately trying to pump water from well. Its a good bet that he doesn't use .08's.

I have to break with Page here. 8s just don't have the tone. I usually use split sets...top three strings from a set of 10s bottom three from a set of 9s.

Have you tried those?

they hard to play? what do you have them on - what type of guitar?

I have them on all my guitars, the only thing that is hard is the hybrid picking on TSRTS on the 12 string neck of the doubleneck.

DADGAD brought up a good point about how precise page's right hand was, but I just love how well the heavy strings stay in tune!

For some reason if i see Page with a guitar i go out and buy one like it. That is what first turned me on to Les Paul's then i had to buy a Danelectro and so on.

I use Ernie ball .8's on all my guitars. On my two les Paul's, two strats and on my Tele too. Like bb king said those heavy gauge strings, why you working so hard. Its all about the lighter gauge. Its so easy to play almost comes natural. You have to buy plenty of single high e strings though cuzzthey break at the ball quite often. I just buy the high e in bulk 12 of em for 3 bucksat juststrings.com

The heavier strings do give a little different tone. Some people prefer the different tone. I once met a guy who told me he uses 13s. My B string on my guitars is 11. I believe Earnie Ball uses an 11 B string on their extra and super slinkies (8s / 9s).

jpage25, i agree with the 9's on the fenders, the 10's on the gibbys but not with the 11's on the hollowbodies. Why do people, or at least ones that i know, put heavier gauge strings on hollow bodies? seems as though they would have the lighter ones

idk. maybe this is just me being paranoid, but i never really trusted a hollow body to support heavy string tension.

I can see where that would have nice tone

i dont agree here. i have always gotten a better tone with thicker strings on humbuckers than with the thinner strings. i just take a preference to thin strings, easier to bend
