i would just add a few words about a side of this whole tragedy that seemed to be overlooked in much of the previous commentary.
anyone...and i do mean anyone, who chooses to take the ultimate step of committing suicide has serious mental health problems.
this does not in any way excuse others who may have tormented, bullied or treated that person badly.
but it is a fact that suicide is a widespread problem, and especially among younger folks.
statistically here in North America it is in the top 10 causes of death for both men and women.
sadly it is something that is not openly discussed. it is treated as a taboo subject most of the time.
i'm sure most will agree that dealing with the physical, mental, emotional and social changes that occur during the teen years is difficult for most people. most get through it, but often have to deal with alienation, frustration, confusion and a whole list of changes and challenges. sadly some kids, just find they cannot cope and 'opt out'.
i knew 4 kids in my high school who killed themselves. 3 guys and 1 girl. all separate incidents and all for different reasons, i guess. although most of them were well-liked, "normal" kids. but clearly no one recognized their cries for help.
