Well after all the questions and looking around, this is what I found.

I decided to go with a used LP and a new amp rather than the new LP I had originally planned on. My thinking was... what would that new LP sound like through his $30 amp?

1997 LP DC studio. and a Used Crate V-50, Model 5112 tube amplifier. The guitar pictures are actual, but don't do it justice, the amp picture I found on Ebay.

Ya think he'll like it?

Better than underware. :D

I figured this would be better than sitting in front of an X-Box.

Congrats to you and your son!!

I got my first guitar for Christmas. I was six and can remember it like it was yesterday (it was 25 years ago).

I need more help...The grand parents what to buy a few accessories, any recommendations? What else would a young guitarist want or need to go along with this set-up?

I'd say some good stomp boxes or something like a line 6 pod...

Maybe get him some CDs/DVDs of his favorite guitarists... or some lesson DVDs.. maybe some backing tracks that he can improv to. I'd recommend those as some items that would give him something constructive to do. Effects pedals and stuff can be cool, but they often get to the point of just being toys to play with.

Maybe swap the pickups?

Are these pickups not so good?

Lesson DVDs :hmm: any recommendations?

I've thought of strap locks, what brand works the best?

Thanks again for the input.

Stock Gibson pickups are pretty decent. I'd let your son play the hell out of it and decide if he likes them or not. For straplocks, I've used schallers and ernie balls, they're not bad. To me it's really annoying that I have to have extra hardware attached to my straps though and I've got to install special strap buttons on the guitar. Now I just use those rubber gaskets from Grolsch type beer bottles. Works like a charm, I tell you. (and gets you buzzed)
