I'm new to participating in this forum but have been lurking around reading alot from posts when making my decision on my new LP. Basically what it came down to was a Slash signature in tabacco burst or an Elitist Vintage Burst LP. The store didnt have any Slash in so I have temporarily paid on that to get one in to try out the thicker neck and see if thats what I perfer. The Elitist Sounded great and played well. I was happy with it.

Any suggestions on which you would go with or be more inclined to own? Both are a limited guitar now I suppose that the Elites were discontinued.

My understanding, and I could be wrong, is that the Slash is just a spruced up Epiphone. The Elitists are not related to standard Epis at all construction-wise. Elitists use solid bookmatched wood. Plus tops are veneer but it's over a 100%, LP spec, maple cap. To my knowledge this is the only veneer used on Elitists and it's not to cover up anything, but to add the flame.

I think I'd have a hard time paying what they're asking for the Slash Epi LP. Not that it's a bad guitar, but on some level, I think you're paying extra for the signature model than it's probably worth in the long run.

I'd go with the Elitist, but I'm very biased too..;)

I just picked up a Slash Tobacco burst and it is a really nice guiatr...far better than any other epi I've had. It has a long neck Tenon, real Seymour Duncans, amazing sustain and a really nice neck (my opinion)... Granted it is in the higher price range for an Epi but I think the extra $ is worth it...plus you get the case and the Slash swag which comes with it.. I enjoy it as much as my Gibby Standard faded..

Never played an Elitest so I can't comment...

Bottom line is that the Elitist is a better guitar - crafted in Japan - and a full step up from anything that Epiphone is making in China. There are almost too many reasons to list - not the least of which are one piece neck, correct Gibson headstock angle, bone nut, nice African Mahogany solid bodies, on and on and on...

The fact that you've found an Elitist and have been able to play it is some kind of omen - they have been discontinued and are very difficult to find now...

Good call Joe - nothing "wrong" with the Slash what-so-ever, it just isn't on par w/ the Elitist in most all areas.

Be sure to show us some pix after you get it!

I've got a VB Elitist Standard as well and love it to death.

I had a Slash Tobacco and it DID NOT HAVE REAL SEYMOUR DUNCANS

It had Epiphone USA pickups...

I was more than a little disappointed, and sent it back for a full refund...

If I had my druthers, I would have gotten an Elitist

Slash vs Elitist
Chinese vs Japanese
Elitist is way better constructed and I dont think the slash is that good its just an epi with upgraded pups and maybe a slightly different neck

Cool!

I'm new here and I really signed up to ask this question first and then get involved.

Until now, I've been playing only acoustic for a couple of years. I did own an Alpine White Epi Les Paul in the 90's that I bought because it looked like Randy Rhoads LP but I haven't touched an electric guitar in years. Lately I have a strong desire to play electric again and decided a Les Paul of some kind is what I want. I am a fan of early GnR and love Velvet Revolver but I am much more Neil Youngish than Slashish as a player, if you know what I mean.

There are still new Elitists out there to be had. I am considering 3 choices.

Elitist Les Paul Standard
Epi Slash Signature
Gibson Vintage Mahogany

I like that all 3 already have good pickups in them as opposed to buying an Epi and changing them.

I'm torn over all 3.
Slash- thicker neck,Duncan pickups, nice looking top ( and I admit a sucker for sig models)
Elitist- Japanese quality, true specs, Gibson pickups
Gibson- USA, true specs, Burstbuckers, but no sunburst

All fall into the same price range within about $100 of each other.

This will start a flame war - but the Elitist has truer specs than the VM in most areas. Solid body (not chambered) and long neck tenon (short on VM) make a big difference to me. Then again, the VM is a cheaper guitar by a couple hundred bucks. It would be between the Elitist and the VM if I were you - and the Elitist is the better choice in my opinion (I've got 2 of them). They are much more comparable to the Gibson Historics (other than finish and 2 piece back - they are very similar) whereas the VM is more in line with the rest of the USA Gibson models (chambered, short tenon, etc.).

Thank you very much:thumb:

It looks like I'm going to go with the Elitist. For the reasons you mentioned and I think I really want a maple cap and will always have GAS for a flame top until I get one.

A few online dealers are showing new models in stock.... I'm thinking a vintage sunburst.

I'd be surprised if anyone has stock online - they've really dried up. Best of luck finding one though - they're great guitars.

Well, I just pulled the the trigger on a Elitist Standard Plus Vintage Sunburst LP from Musicians Friend....who has them on "clearance" and supposedly in stock.

I say supposedly because I've tried to buy things off MF before that showed "in stock and ready to ship" only to find out the next day that they in fact don't have the item in stock. They also show Elitist Custom Lp's on backorder with an "expected arrival date" of 01/09 and I highly doubt that will hold true.

They also show stock on Elitist Standard Plus LP's in faded cherry and also 57Goldtops. If they don't have the Vintage Sunburst I'll try for either of those next but I'm holding back my excitement somewhat until I know it's a done deal. :slash:

That said I am pretty excited and hoping this comes through.

Thanks so much again, being new here your advice and this forum was essential:applause: in my decision to choose the Elitist....I was very close to pulling the trigger on the Slash (somone scored the Slash I had my eye on today anyway) but didn't realize the differences and those differences easily seem more than worth the $185 I would have saved if I chose the Slash LP.

Wish me luck on this deal coming through
