I have a chance to pick up a 94 standard for $1000.
What can you tell me about this guitar?

Thanks,
John E.

I can tell you I have a '92. It's beautiful (to me), came with two 490R pickups, a slim neck, and puts me at risk of a hernia.

unfortunately the serial number has been removed but it is a vintage sunburst or tobacco burst. It's got nickel covers and a cream pickguard. I know who it's last 2 owners were and trust them. But yes, at one point it was stolen.

Then why buy it? Why in fact even post this on this site? I can't speak for everyone here, but if you want to know how I feel about people buying stolen stuff with no serial number, shoot me a PM.

stolen guitars have negative mojo.

avoid this guitar, unless you can return it to the rightful owner. (if you can, do that).

life is too short to stack karma against you.

Ok, Well... I Didn't mean to offend everyone. This thing has been around. I don't know how it came to have it's serial number removed. All I know is that a guitar collector and trader that I do trust sold it to a friend of mine, I'm broke, and I really want a Les Paul, and this friend is willing to sell it to me. Does that make me a bad guy? Hmm, I hadn't even thought of that.

Above sheet is for 90ies Les Pauls and from Gibson Customer Service. '94 was Gibsons centennial anniversary and '94-serial numbers does not follow the usual standard. In this case, that doesn't really matter.

Does that make me a bad guy?

Unless you're leaving out part of the story... no.

This guitar's not finding its way back to its original owner. The thief has already picked up the bad mojo from it. You're not going to be able to make a profit by reselling it, since the serial's been removed. If I were the original owner, I'd be happier knowing someone other than the thief was enjoying playing my guitar.

While on tour in Chicago some friends of mine had their van broken into. Most of their gear was stolen, including a 70's Fender Deluxe Telecaster, Gibson SG, old P-Bass and some one-off guitars. We played a gig with them shortly after in NJ, and he had to use his Dad's '78 Strat. He was heartbroken, and kept that Strat on his back in a gig bag the whole night before and after playing. Wouldn't let it out of his sight, and didn't trust anyone. It was a sad sight to see.

Knowing him, and after much legwork, he finally found the bands gear online at a well known music exchange store in Chicago. Most the gear was returned and the store took a beating, and hopefully learned a lesson in the process.

With that said, simply based the fact you know it was a stolen guitar at one point, I would pass. If it was mine, everytime I picked it up I would think of the poor guy who's missing it, and spent his money to buy it honestly.

Ok. So I was completely wrong and misunderstood the guy with the guitar. It was never stolen. the Serial number had been chisled out and restamped below it (still don't know why). When he told me about it originally I assumed it was stolen because all I heard was "no serial number". He kind of mumbles alot. Anyway, I'm at work now and didn't write them down, but what all can I find out about the guitar using the serial number? Did Gibson keep detailed records of there serial numbers?

Thanks,
John E.

Screw the bad mojo/juju stuff. If it were stolen, the original owner has more than likely collected the insurance money and replaced the guitar. Yeah it sucks for them but it has had two owners that you happen to know since. If it is in good shape and you dig how it plays and sounds, buy it.

IF there's any chance the new number is the same (which strikes me as exceedingly doubtful), you can tell on what date it was stamped onto the guitar. Gibson customer service may also be able to tell you the model and finish of the guitar assigned that number.
