Personaly my favorite is MSN Explorer Premium, but you only get
it if you have MSN as your main internet software.

Makes sense, the more you have running in Windows the worse Internet Explorer is. Explorer.exe controls IE and your Start Menu and any other window you might have open locally. Which is why if you crash IE anything tied into Windows itself can go haywire. Crash Chrome or Safari or Firefox and all you have to do is open it back up and restore your session.

No mess.

I didn't know that, thanks.

Started programs are unlikely to cause this problem.
15 sounds crazy........probably tasks rather than programs or you are installing things incorrectly.
IE used to piggyback windows/windows explorer.
Thanks to the EU IE 9 is stand alone but is a POS.

To a non-computerhead like me, programs and tasks are interchangeable terms, sorry if my treating them as such has caused any confusion.

I doubt it's underpowerd or lack of memory. There is nothing on here that would slow it down being its brand new. And its fine doing everything else. I plug my old computer in with XP and it's fine so I know it's not my service either.

I don't know about that.. the AMD E-450 APU is pretty down towards the lower end of the performance charts..

These are pretty much low end processors. Just look at what they compare to, some rather old processors.. My advice would be to go through your startup and disable pretty much everything you absolutely do not need..

Open up a Command window, type msconfig, select the Startup tab, and un-check everything you do not to run automatically at boot up. I recommend keeping your anti-virus and any necessary device drivers/apps if there are any..

When done click OK.. it may prompt you to reboot, you can cancel out of that and reboot later..

I didn't know they made IE9 stand alone like the other browsers. But that shows you how little I care for IE and Windows in general. :laugh2:

And either way, IE is and will probably always be a resource hog. I prefer Safari on my Mac, Chrome on a Windows machine.

Thats strange, i have had Windows 7 64 pro on all my comuputers for the last couple of years, and its way better than XP ever was.
doesnt sound right.

I agree.. While I do not claim to be some expert, According to Windows, I installed Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit on 12/3/2009

trick, how to find out when Windows was installed, run this from Command window:

systeminfo | find /i "Install Date"

Anyway, it's been just over two years, and (knock on wood) no major crash and no need to reinstall. Only issue I really had was a video card dying.. That's beside the point, hopefully we can figure out and get tk's system running smoother.. It should be possible to do.

Google;
Compatibility mode

...when using IE.
Try putting IE into Compaibiloity mode. Some web site links wouldn't work until
I put Internet Explorer into Compat mode.
Worked great after that.

while vista was a complete pos, our newest box is running 7 and no problems thus far, so I would seriously guess either a very underpowered CPU or lack of memory, oras previously suggested a virus slowing you down

I never had any trouble with Vista, but Windows 7 is giving me a few problems. I ain't in love with Windows 7.

On my HTPC my audio and video get out of sync, fairly often. It sucks. I got the digital (Clear QAM) channels, but the audio sync is a problem.

Also the Movie Maker that came with Vista is not in Windows 7. I had to the Live software. I ain't real happy with that.

I'm running Windows 7 on my Mac Pro Xeon system via boot camp. No problems whatsoever. I'm a fan. :thumb:

I have Snow Leopard installed, but don't use it.

If you are talkin' to me, then I have not purposefully done that.

Well, I think I did get Direct X, because my IMON needed it. Active X, I ain't so sure about.

One of the things that irritates me about Winblows 7 is the "automated" processes.
Indexing all your data everytime your computer idles, automatic backups, etc. etc.
Disk access is crazy sometimes. The more data you have the longer it takes.

Besides the Winblows 7 issues, there could be a serious issue with data transfer and you CPU (OP).
The clockfrequency of a CPU is only a part of the speed your computer can achieve. Data also needs to be transfered between CPU,Memory, HDD, Videocard etc.
If the bandwith is too narrow, this can bottleneck your PC.

Compared to a modern CPU, your's is a 2-lane highway, modern CPU's have 4-8 lanes.
Winblows 7 is made for 4-8 lanes CPU's.

I pretty much agree with everything everyone has said.

Definitely check your Startup items..... I personally turn everything off other than the antivirus and all of the system drivers... Obviously some clients insist that their precious Weatherbug or Google Desktop Search comes on at startup and hogs RAM, and refuse to let me disable it yet they'll bitch when it runs slow.

So try the msconfig list as previously suggested. Some of it can sound foreign but if you look at the description it makes more sense or if you arent sure, google the name of the service and find out what it is. My rule is that if it isn't the AV or a system driver (typically it's graphics, sound, and trackpad for laptops drivers) or a part of Windows, it's getting disabled. That means Google Updater, Weather monitors, sidebars, etc etc etc.

Also, please run this if the above doesn't not help. Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download It's free. Download it, hit decline when it asks for a trial, go to the update tab and make sure you have the latest definitions (although it should update upon installation, but to be safe), and then go to the main tab and do a Quick Scan (Full Scan is best but can take a while. My rule of thumb is to do a Quick Scan and if it finds something, follow it up with a Full Scan and more scanners.)

Let me know if you run Malwarebytes and if it finds anything. If it finds anything in red, make sure it's checked in the box next to the listing and click quarantine/remove/delete (whatever it's called, can't remember at the moment, LOL!). Then restart your machine and report back because if it does, we will need to follow it up with a Hitman Pro scan and I'll give the instructions for that if I need to later.

I realize it may not be a top spec machine, but it should not be painfully slow IMO.

New PC's do come with a lot of bloatware and after you uninstall all of the trial junk and other useless garbage and go through your Startup Items, you should be pretty damn fast. If not, likely you are infected or are having other system issues.

Windows 7 is not the issue here. The issue is more than likely software/malware related. Not a hardware or specific OS issue related to specifically only W7.

And lastly, I don't know what your AV is or if you removed what would likely be a trial antivirus but I highly recommend immediately switching to something either free or that is good for a full year and uninstalling the trialware. Definitely uninstall the current one first before running the installer on the new one, don't run both or they can cancel each other out. I can't tell you how many clients buy a PC or buy an antivirus and think the AV lasts forever and then get infected after it expires. Free AVs also need updated every year when the new version comes out. But I highly recommend Kaspersky for a paid solution, or Avast for a free solution. I'm not an AVG fan personally (a bit too RAM heavy for my tastes as well as it's lack of zero day malware protection) and Avira is prone to false positive detections. Avast is great. Microsoft Security Essentials is OK, better than the other two but not as good as Avast IMO in the protection department. It's also RAM heavy. Panda Cloud is another great option I've been using on computers that are older or netbooks that need something super light on resources. I'm not a Norton fan either, it's just a bit too bloated for my tastes and I prefer Kaspersky's firewall and other protection modules. Avast and Panda are my free choices, Kaspersky or ESET for paid. The new 2012 Kaspersky is super light and very good and ESET is not too bad either, perhaps a bit heavier but not much.

Sorry to hear that the OP has issues with his computer. FWIW. I've loved Win 7 since the RC and it's running fine now. Oh and I love FF 10. :)

OK Here we go.. Most what you described can be disabled or at a minimum take some stress off the system..

Here... A semi-quick guide to stinkfoot's Windows 7 Optimization.. This is my services list.. You will see all the services that I have disabled or set to run manually (Windows or a program will start the service if needed), and those that start at boot time - I've been running this config for ages and I have zero issues with my pc or windows..

Now be aware, there may be some things shown below that are not on your computer - do not worry.. everyone's config is different, different hardware & software and whatnot.. basically YMMV.. Just disregard something you see which you do not have..

My only suggestion now is if you do change anything, write down what you changed, what the old setting was, and what the new setting is, this way you can go back to the old setting(s) if you decide you want to.. now onto the list..

Open up a Command window (or click Start, enter in the "search" box) type:

services.msc

The Services dialog should open. Click on the bottom tab that says 'Standard".. Then you can if you want go adjust the column widths and then just go down the list changing what you want to match below..

Services_0.jpg

Services_1.jpg

Services_2.jpg

Services_3.jpg

and there ya go.. give a reboot and you should hopefully your start/boot should go a little faster..

Have fun! :applause:

There's your problem...
Two things, I have been told by a friend that owns his own computer business and said it's good for what I paid, especially since it was a black friday sale. Second, I pay a hell of a lot of child support and barely make it financially so i don't have much choice.
