A bit more input from me, to expand on what I said yesterday.
A few years ago, I stated on several forums that this was the direction I could see games like this moving. People doubted. Then Rock Band came out with the Squier controller and Pro mode. (Which I have... as a guitar, it's cheesy (but works) as a controller, it's great... more attention to the fretwork is dreadfully needed though.)
I picked my Rocksmith up yesterday for Xbox.
So far, I really like it. I can see it becoming a great tool, and here's why.
I've always struggled with sensing where I am on the fretboard, even what string I'm picking or fretting, unless I'm able to see it. I often fret one string, and pick another! I'm fairly fumble-fingered when it comes to fast passages, and have some limited mobility in my fretting hand. By needing to watch the screen, it forces me not to do what I'm used to...look where I'm playing.
I don't know how accurately it senses string bending, but that's another thing I've always struggled with... getting the right pitch. If it tracks well, it should help in that area as well.
Chords.. yep, I've always struggled with those too, because of my fumble-fingered-ness. More than a couple chord changes? Forget it... I haven't delved into that area of the game yet, but I know it's there.
Don't know if there's a scale "tutor" but I hope so. I've NEVER been able to memorize scales.
As someone who gets frustrated after a while of fumbling around and not being able to memorize the board, I can see the interaction being very useful since I love games. I can see it being an AWESOME tool for improving dexterity and memory.
On thing I am slightly disappointed by is that there's no on-line multiplayer. I also wish there was a note drop-out feature similar to rock Band, or if it were obvious when I'm playing a wrong note.
I say: BUY IT. These games are starting to die off, just when they are making leaps and bounds in the technology and teaching aspects. They are no longer the stupid pushabutton games of Guitar Hero. If it doesn't sell well, games like this will probably die off completely.
