Better if you don't remove the covers, you could damage them in the proses and they are more valuable when they have not been tampered with

Definitely check the current price difference between opened and unopened PAFS so you know how much devaluation will occur.

I think whatever you do mostly depends on your buyer and your need or ability to prove authenticity.

The only reason I can see for opening them is if that is what is needed to make the sale, to satisfy the buyer's concerns, or to clearly photograph the internals to back your self up against any claim of recourse from an unscrupulous buyer.

But provenance like showing the PU's attached to a '59 guitar, or a bill of sale to your dad along with any proof that he died in '65, might also go far to adding confidence with respect to a covered PU (as well as date the PU).

But if you have to open them - I would think opening only 1 would be sufficient and make sense. Whatever you do, do it with utmost care.

Even though the cell phone pics above are pretty crappy, I think I can see a white bobbin peeking out of the far right polepiece screw. :fingersx:

Unless you're goal is to reduce the value of the pickup, do not remove the cover to check the color of the bobbin! You can check the color of the polepiece side by backing out one of the polepiece screws. The color of the slug side can be checked by removing one of the phillips screws on the bottom.

Also, don't cut the leads! If you don't feel comfortable with removing the pots so that you can unsolder the leads, take it to a luthier and pay him to do it for you. Its worth the expense. If you're planning to install a new set of pickups in the 175, you can have him do it at the same time.

Disassembling an irreplaceable family heirloom to feed our insatiable government would literally break my heart.

If there weren't another way I'd probably sell the guitar intact just so it would be happy.

I would sell something else before I destroyed the integrity of the original guitar. Your Dad would spank you :laugh2:

That's an heirloom Brother, save it for your Son

Yes I would not remove them from the guitar if it was mine, I would rather sell the guitar complete and original to some one who would appreciate it, it is always a shame to break up an original 50's Gibson guitar for parts.

The solder in pic 2 doesn't look factory. If that's the case, no harm in removing the covers again (assuming you know how to do it right).

coming from an es 175 those pickups would have narrow string spacing i presume.

No, the spacing would be correct. Only the neck pickup from a Byrdland would have that narrow spacing.

They only made 129 ES 175DN's in '59. Man, do not take the pickups out of this guitar. It will be a big mistake and shame IMHO.

I'm not religious or an expert on religion but that probably qualifies as a sin.

ok, first, i feel i should apoligize to mods here if this format is not the usual in the for sale section here. i didnt expect the big rush these things have gotten. i didnt mean for this to have an auction feel to it, but there has been no way to avoid it.

the highest offer ive gotten here has been $3000.00, but there is one person in so. cal. and another who asked me not even to name where he is from. one of them has offered $7,900.00, and i dont think the other is finished.

i have asked each if they can just give me a top figure, and each has said "no more than it takes to get them" (in so many words) and thats where it stands right now (12:20 am monday the 28th of march)

if anyone here is still interested, let me know.

some of you guys have almost talked me out of selling them, but its really too late for that now. i know im about to have some cash, and be in the clear it looks like with my house, and bills and all that, but damn. it hurts.

again mods and members, im sorry. bryan.

Who's to say that the those aren't double whites or zebras in the ES-175 I posted?
We don't know what these are that the seller here is selling.
Its hard to make an offer if we don't know what the bobbins are?
If they are double whites $5-8K
Zebras $?
Blacks $3000-$4000

the only color of plastic inside them is black, at least on the side of the pups that have the adjustment screws. i have not taken them apart and am not planning on doing so.

reading the ohms using the cord method, the neck pup reads 7.7, and the bridge pup reads 7.8.

i used a fluke model 175 digital meter, switched to each through the toggle switch.

josh: i will remove the other screws and take picks and/or let you know the color, but i have decided not to take an iron to either.

niether of the 2 have actually expressed concerns about the color or the authenticity, other than to confirm that if they are not what they are after, that i would let them return them, to which i agreed.
