Does anyone know of a better source for getting a set of Robo~Sanders than Stewmac? They seem to have the best complete set for guitar building, but I'm always leery about their pricing. $78.00 for three sanding templating drums seems a little steep to me. But I can't find the same set anywhere else so I have no real comparison for cost. It could be another brand too, I don't really care if it's real Robo or not. Also while we're on the topic, can anyone recommend a good quality bench top oscillating spindle sander? Right now I'm looking at the grizzly for $149.00, but I'm not married to it. Any advise would be appreciated.

Woodcraft and the maker of the Robo Sander sell them too, but I don't see any real discount on them.

You could use a normal drum sander and have a Guide under the Drum itself, that the wood butts up against - if you get my meaning.

The Riigid ROSS -as the TDPI guys call it- seems pretty poplar for a OS:

Hum, that does look interesting. I like the idea of having two different style sanders in one too. I'm not a big Home Depot fan, but I'll look into it anyway.

thanks, John....

My father in law bought that one and I've used it quite a bit in the last couple of years. The speed is a little slower than I'd like and you can't put too much pressure on the belt/spindle or it stops turning, but for the money and the versatility, it's still a very good tool to have. I plan on buying one for myself at some point.

The G0538 looks similar to the [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Rockwell-RK9011-Oscillating-Spindle-Sander/dp/B002CJLV0U/ref=sr_1_3?s=power-hand-tools&ie=UTF8&qid=1287673982&sr=1-3"]Rockwell RK9011[/ame]. The only metal in these are the top, fasteners and wire. They tend to have a 1/2" to 5/8" stroke and the motors are not enclosed.

You mentioned benchtop but the G9922 is on my short list. Notice the spindle speed is 3450 (which you may want to slow down) and only one 2" diameter spindle provided. I may rework a replacement 1 1/2" spindle from a [ame="http://www.amazon.com/708404-Horsepower-Benchtop-Oscillating-Assortment/dp/B00005A3GW/ref=sr_1_1?s=power-hand-tools&ie=UTF8&qid=1287673982&sr=1-1"]Jet[/ame] to get another size.

I have the Grizzly model you're referring to and it works great for me but it only gets moderate use. I also read a thread on TDPRI where people rave about the ROSS. I'm not a huge Home Deperate fan either, but the guys at TDPRI love the thing and have found tons of uses for it. The added versatility would be worth the few extra bucks in my opinion(assuming it holds up.)

I saw the rockwell too, but the table top on the grizzly is bigger and therefore more appealing to me.

Yeah, that does look like a much better choice in general, but it's too big. I'm fresh out of available floor space in my tiny two car garage. The only way i could go with a larger machine like that would be to remove it from the stand and bench mount it in the work bench. And I'd probably have to lose and or modify the main housing in order to get it to mount. That would screw my warranty should I have an issue with the machine.

By the way, it's good to keep in mind the fact that Grizzly will charge you a delivery fee. And the carrier will charge an additional fee to off load it from their truck. it's a liftgate fee. Their going to pull up in front of your door in a semi. And they'll expect you to unload it yourself unless other arrangements have been made. In the case of my bandsaw, it was 210 pounds with packing materials. I would think that sander is probably around 150 or so. How you get it out of the truck is a real consideration unless you have a few friends there to help you. I paid an additional $40.00 (standard liftgate fee) to have the guy off load and roll my bandsaw into the garage with a pallet jack. Altogether I think I paid $100.00 for the delivery. That can start to make the price tag on the tool look less attractive.

John....

I have the grizz table top unit.. kicks ass... never had a problem with it and its had the snot beat out of it for the past five years.

I want to upgrade to a freestanding unit, but, really, only because of the more powerful motor and not having to drag it out from under the bench. but, then there's the room thing..

I'm looking for one of those crasftsman three sided "rotary tool benches" right now to eliminate this problem!!

The G9922 manual has the shipping weight at 102 lbs. If it was any more than that it would be an issue getting off the truck. The [ame="http://www.amazon.com/708404-Horsepower-Benchtop-Oscillating-Assortment/dp/B00005A3GW/ref=sr_1_5?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1287682887&sr=1-5"]Jet JBOS-5[/ame] looks nice - except for the price.

One good thing about the Rigid, John.. It has that flat area which really comes in handy for truing flat areas up... I shaped that Mosrite double-neck in the BGC thread on that sander.. It has a vacuum port in the back where you can hook your shop vac right up to it, no muss, no fuss..

I have a similar one as the grizzly and dont leave home without it. Especially for template and neckbuilding nothing beat it. The robosander is not oscilating and have a tendency to clogg-up real fast.

I've got the ROSS, and it's maybe the perfect tool for shaping guitars. The spindle sander does the inside curves, and the belt sander does the outside curves and flat surfaces. I'm about to start shaping my neck with the belt sander, which is narrow enough to easily fit it between the head and heel.

i'm going to take a stroll over to the Home Depot today and checkout the Ross. I hear their having closeout sales on some Ridgid tools anyway. Who knows, maybe I'll come home with something completely different than I went there for. Wouldn't be the first time.

I went to the home depot today and saw the ross... well sort of. It was in the box, not on display. But I can tell by the size of the box that if I do wind up with this unit I'm going to need to find a home for it. it's a little to big to be kicking around on top of the bench.
