It's funny when someone says a 5w amp is too loud!

Obviously, 15w is more than enough. Knock that down with a triode/pentode switch like the Night Train, and get 7.5w. Then the Marshall has 5w, and the VOX AC4 has 4w with a built in switch for 4/1/.25w. When will it ever end?

Blackstar is bringing out a 1 watt amp.

One option is the so-called 'bedroom mod' in which you hook the cable from an extension cab into the headphone jack (but only plug it in half way). Apparently this helps but I've never tried it.

Another option is the Dr. Z attenuator for combo amps. I believe it is called the Brake Lite and is designed to be installed inside combo amps. You would have to drill two small holes in the base of the amp to anchor it but since they are inside who cares?

The bedroom mod takes the levels down too far. I could barely hear it over the strings, with the amp on 5.

I dont care for it either, besides the volume, the headphone output is voiced to emulate the sound of a speaker, then to run that through a speaker sounds a bit weird. Everyone has different result though, it must depend alot on the cab/speakers

The result I got was Shitetone, which is not the same thing as Slashtone. :slash:

Do you really need it with a master volume?

you would get more power tube saturation with an attenuator vs master volume. As far as I know, they only thing you'd need to make it work with a Blues Jr would be an 8 ohm L pad

I posted the schematic on how to do that, and you can also build it as an external box.

Keep in mind though, you shouldn't try this thing with anything over 20W, but works wonders with 5W and even 15W.

You can also throw in a non-polarized electrolytic cap on a switch to bring back some of the tone that's lost to attenuation.

These things are really cool, and I got one for my 18W, also built one into an old VJ I had... Really helpful.

how do you think it would sound with an 18w phaez?
and where did you post the schematics?...id love to have an effective way to attenuate my phaez for home use without too much tone loss!

Could someone repost Boshizzle's original pics? I just got a Class 5, and it's deafening in my tile living room.

Thanks!

I would also like to see them too please!!
(although I do think power scaling would be a better solution)
