I know it's a relative term but I'm looking for a low wattage tube amp with balls. Comparitively I played a Sunn beta lead a couple weeks ago and was blown away by the amount of umph at even low volumes. The drive channel had some serious chunky balls. Even the clean channel had a punch and clarity of chorded notes that astounded me. The downer is the price, condition, solid state, size and damn loudness past .5 on the volume.

I have owned and played a number of small tube amps; JTM, goldtone, musicmaster, 2061x, Tiny terror, blues junior, deluxe reverb, etc. I currently own an epi valve junior. It sounds and works great for what I use it for but it doesn't have balls. It has been modded for tighter lower freq response but even cranked it doesn't have that omph! It's smoother if that makes sense.

I have tried a few pedals with no luck. Does anyone clone a Sunn preamp into a pedal?

I'm looking for input on 1-30w tube amps with that ballsy omph at a good price. I listened to the few Orange ad-15 clips on YT; they are close but not right on and that amp is damn expensive when you can find it.

Thanks for the help.

Using an OD pedal or (even better) a cranked EQ pedal, combined with an attenuator will give your VJ some balls if you're interested in trying that out. That's what I used to do before I took the amp apart and somehow broke it. :laugh2:

You could also mod that VJ to be master volume. There's guides on that stuff all over the place. It won't sound quite as beefy as using an attenuator, but it would probably sound pretty good.

It's just a shame to have an amp sitting around that you're completely satisfied with... and the only other option really is to sell it, but they don't retain value very well on the used market because they're so cheap to begin with.

I've tried a compressor, eq and drive pedals. I was using the eq to try and dial in some balls but I'll try it as a clean boost and see if that can do it.

I do have a mini mass on my EVJ so I can turn it up and control the overall volume but it still retains its smooth character.

The Carr sounds good but it seems to lack the punch I'm looking for. It sounds really good for that swampy CCR tone. Don't give me gas for that too.

A compressor will remove balls, so to speak as it levels out the dynamics or balls.

Check.

Thanks Brian.
He doesn't want sweet though, he wants "balls".
Of which it has!

I'm digging it. If this is your product I may need to speak with you. :thumb:

Tiny terror has no balls?

IMO it has loose balls . I have a pretty specific sound in my head and I could not dial it in with a TT.

Head'n'cab. Head has been modded for a tighter more responsive low end and I'm using a 55hz speaker. But the whole setup is very smooth sounding. Great for jazz and actually does well with fuzz/ stoner rock.

Here are a couple Sunn beta lead clips. Both have horrible audio but you can get the jist. Even the clean reverby clip has some balls. The heavily distorted clip has some serious balls.

Just to reiterate... Balls.
