I have 2 Pearlies one that weighs 8lbs 4ozs, the other weighs 9lbs 8ozs. I love them both. The heavier one is definitely much louder acoustically. Both play very similar. I have a bigger frame, so the extra pound does not impact me. Now my Doubleneck at 12.5 lbs impacts me after an hour of playing...:wow:

Those two are great looking guitars...were you a little bothered about the jump up in weight between the two guitars and did you ask the dealer questions about it?

I noticed that Marks Guitar Loft recently sold a VOS PG with an asking price of $6,500? I know that it was second hand...but that is $1,500 less than new...are they changing hands at less than the new price...on Ebay there are two for sale at £7,500ish and £10,000ish?

Did anyone ever get a final answer on whether the pups are standard PG SD pups or are they the Custom Shop SD PG version?

I am thinking about if i ever need to sell it later...i wouldn't want to find that people say that it is not worth much because it is too heavy for a PG.

Were many over 9 lbs?

MANY vintage 50's LPs were well over 9lbs - in BOTB alone they go up to 9.7lb

don't sweat it - the 50's LPs weren't all as light as most here think!

i reckon of the 1000's made in the 50's they were between about 7.5 and 10 lbs, with an average of about 9lb. With any historic - I'd say if its between these weight and sounds great, then thats all that should matter!

Thanks Joff. At first I told the dealer to hold off and I would think about it. But after 5 minutes of thinking, and the fact that I have a Jimmy Page CA at 9 and 1/2 pounds and a 2007 R9 at the same weight, it became a no brain-er and I called right back and told the dealer its a deal.

6500 (USD) is a good deal. Prices varied between 6500-7200 (USD) new, and now some are trying to capitalize on the fact that they are all sold out and you cant find one except on the used market, thus the inflated price. Also take into account the countries monetary conversion when pricing.

Good Luck with your Pearly quest, and I believe you will be very happy if one comes your way.:dude:

Personal choice but:
I like my heavier Historics better for lead solos- (mick taylor direction)
To my ears they have more midrange honk and sustain.
imho The trend / rumor about "perfect weight" is wrong.
All depends on the individual instrument, player, and tone you ARE seeking.

Here is the original Pearly...extremely difficult to find one with a similar top.

I've never seen that pic before... Poor Pearly :(.

To this day, I have never seen a cooler looking color on an original burst... PG is one of a kind IMHO.

Personally, I've decided to say 'screw the weight'. If it's a looker and a player full of tone, you will never regret it and those qualities will count for a lot more with the resale value than the weight... if you ever had to sell. How you get a good one :)

I was looking at a couple of VOS JP #2s and a couple of VOS PGs at Coda Music in the UK...they had one of each at their two stores. One of the JPs sold only leaving one which i prefered the look of anyway...and being the very last new one in the UK (weighing in at 9 lbs dead) i put a deposit down immediately. But...they also had this 9.5 lb PG which just stuck in my mind...it looks really beautiful...and it has the bald spots too...not as good as Number 99 but still pretty good...it was even effecting my sleep with it in the back of my mind! So...i rang the dealer again who then said that someone abroad had just requested photos of it to be emailed...so my deposit went down quick!

Now...i just need to sell this asap...never use it much anyway with our crappy UK weather...

joff,

I am in the UK - but was looking at a couple of guitars in the USA.

I am looking for botha JP No2 and a Pearly Gates at the minute. I was told that there was one (Pearly Gates) here in the UK but it didnt have a particularly nice top on it?

Interested to know about locations of either of the aboev if you know of any!

Thanks!
