Wow... I should have listened to everyone that said to get a pro set up when you buy a new EPI LP. I finally took my '09 LP to a guitar tech after 6 months. I just got it back today and cant believe the difference. The action is lower, the crappy stock strings were replaced, the fret board was cleaned and oiled, and the annoying fret buzz is gonzo. Now I get it!!!

Yea well the strings should be replaced when you get home. That said setups are huge.

I dont pay to get em set up. I do it myself haha. Im cheap

I oil my boards and give them a good scrub. I like doing that kind of stuff and find changing strings slightly fun. Is that a weird thing?

I used to go to a luthier/dealer who would not deliver a guitar without a complete setup.

If I could I would do my own, but the guy that does my setups does a far better, more thorough job than I could ever do.
It's worth the money to me.

Glad you have discovered what a quality and professionally done set-up will do for your guitar! I learned the hard way but I now take all my new guitars, even if used, to my luthier for a complete set-up and check out. After that, I do them myself.:):)

Yes it makes a HUGE difference in comfort, playability, tuning stability, and tone when you:

1. Get the frets dressed and polished.

2. Get the truss rod tightened just right

3. Get the action and intonation set just right

4. Get the pickup height set just right.

5. Get the nut slots properly filed/lubed just right.

6. Get the fretboard conditioned

7. Put on a nice new set of strings

Some of my guitars played like total crap......... but then after I did all that..... they're amazingly great!

When I got my guitar set up, it played AWESOME! It played like butter. Bending was a breeze and the frets came back in better condition (they were a little worn down from the previous owner). I have never played a nicer guitar than my guitar after it was setup. After I came back from the US with it, I wanted to get the electronics redone. Basically, my guitar sat in the case with this one guy (the guy I was counting on to do it because I knew of no one else nor where there any shops who wanted to do it for me) for one month. He was busy and when he finally got around it doing it he did it wrong! The next day my teacher found someone else to do it and it came back the next week working (with a few flaws like backward switch and neck volume pot wired backwards but still working). I put it back together and the setup was trashed. The neck had a relief now that I tried to fix myself, but failed (setups are expensive here because there is only one shop in the flipping city that will do it). It still has a slight relief. The action, as a result, got messed up too. No biggy though, I'm used to playing bad guitars (most of them here are trash). It actually makes my fingers stonger! :D I'm hoping to get it setup again. I have no idea what happened to the guitar that would could it to have it's setup undone, but now I really appreciate what a setup is really worth.

Ya. you got to get your guitar set-up. You don't really want to do it in the beginning because it's kind of exspensive, but I cant stand playing my guitars now if there not set-up. You got to do it.

IMHO you shouldn't have to get a guitar setup especially a Gibson/Fender for the price you pay. I understand that Epiphones are inexpensive but it shouldn't be that way.. I do understand to setup to your liking. I setup all my guitars personally..

I hear you man!! I still cant believe what a difference this made. Just the strings alone feel 10 times better. You'd think EPI would put some decent strings on a brand new guitar but I guess not.... Now i know better!

After having my 08' Epi for a year now. (I bought it brand new this time last year). I'm getting a setup next month so hopefully it will make a big difference like you guys are talking about. :)

EDIT: Do you think a luthier will have a pickup switch for my guitar? Or will I have to go buy one online?
