Hi everyone,

Apologies if I am about to ask a stupid noob question.... my knowledge is somewhat limited!

Well I will be buying my first les paul this week and I figured I will probably get a standard.

However I have come across a 1980 black beauty custom in excellent condition. I have no idea of the value of pre owned guitars so my question is: does the £1800 price tag represent value for money? As a guide here in the uk a new standard is around £1500.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Graham.

Thanks for the advice.

My only concern buying online is that I've never bought a guitar without playing it before hand. Are gibson consistent? ie if I test a guitar in a store and buy an identical one online will they play the same?

probably not. however the Standard Faded guitars seem to be the most consistent of the Gibson USA line. and they freakin' rock!

Shop around. Find one YOU like. Don't buy one solely on a recommendation. Pay a premium price only for a guitar you really like. Don't pay more than you can afford. Make sure you buy from a seller with a liberal return policy.
A Les Paul is a commitment. If you buy the right one, you will own it forever. If you buy the wrong one, you have wasted your time, and perhaps some money.
Owning a Les Paul can be a spiritual experience. Take your time, make an educated decision.
Good luck.

The beauty with buying from the US is if you dont like it you can sell it on in the UK for a serious profit. I bought my SG Showcase for £500 ($1050) I have already been offered £1000 for it. :naughty: The chances are, if you go for a Custom Shop Gibson it will rock your world! I have got three Gibsons and three Fenders, total spend - £1600. Oh, and my initial outlay was only £800, I made another £800 selling on a few Orvilles and Gibsons. What have you got to loose?

That is definitely a good point. Check out my buddy, Paul Allen at paul_allen@sweetwater.com. He works at a retailer here in the US. I have bought a few guitars from him.
