You forgot to add that they are all using a drop D tuning-
I'd like to go to GC and pick up a guitar that is in standard tuning just once !

Heh, drop D if you're lucky! It's usually like drop A...

Dragonforce - Horrendous tone. Sounds like a f'n video game... which is what they're shooting for I think...

I'm puttin on a flame suit too...

Anything Eddie Van Halen did. Thin...yuck.

Joe Satriani on Surfing with the Alien...horrid crap in all regards

Most 80s metal...thin...and choruses should be blown up.

Clapton's country "I wanna be JJ Cale" tone. A great example is the song "rock and roll heart. Back when that song came out some band mates and I would wait for the part after he sings "...screamin guitar" and roar with laughter. It does not scream...whine maybe...but not scream.

Most all solo parts on Metallica songs. Thin...no real definition

Ah...most of (ducking!) Slashe's tones. Just a overblown wash of distortion. Nothing appealing or unique at all. If there was ever doubt that it is possible to destroy the great tone of a good LP...Slash...

There's more but that's what I can think of now...hunkering down now...

Basically any tone that's over-processed...trebley whiny phase shifted and chorused to the max sound especially.
A good hand, amp, guitar with good pups and your controls is all you really need for good tone. I'm very old school can't you tell.

Incredible tone....
Leslie West on the early Mountain albums
EC live playin I'm Tore Down on his red 335
Kim Simmons on early Savoy Brown albums when they were playin blues.
SRV..practically anything he did
Derek Trucks playin slide on his SG is amazing

Bad guitar - Where to begin?
A lot, if not most of Van Halen. Good bar songs, like Aerosmith, but his tone was badddddd.

I second that. I love Joe Perry's riffs and tone but Van Halen is horrible. I want to like them so bad because they are cool guys and lived rock n roll as it should be lived, but I just can't get into the music and it is because of the tone! Thanks for bringing this up

this thread rocks! I'm laughing reading through this...

I did also want to confirm my opinion about Beck and Clapton; I felt they both should have stuck with LP's instead of the Fenders. I'm not a fan of the Fenders at all, tone, feel, neck, overall design is just boring....

I've never understood the hype about Zakk Wylde or Slash. Terrible in my opinion, and to say Wylde overdoes the harmonic squeals is an understatement. Unlistenable. Anyone can get Slash "tone" with some gain and a humbucker, throw in some wah if ya like. Bland, cookie-cutter, uninspiring.

My God! At last someone agrees with me! It drives me nuts when I hear that slide disaster. They must have been pretty high to let that pass.
Allman had some great chops, but that sucked.

I completely agree. Meandering, pointless, crappy tone, it's a great example of what not to do to a song.

Right on. Had no idea so many other players hated the same stuff I do. :laugh2:

One guitar sound that immediately lept to my mind was the distorted guitar in John Cougar Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane". Totally jarring, and a very early example of all that went wrong with guitar tone in years since. Even the handclaps in that tune are less annoying, and that's saying something, where I come from! :thumb:

The Zakk Wylde/Post Rhandy Roads ; Ozzy Osbourne sound.

Just sounds 'fizzy'. A wall of overprocessed distortion, sounds more like its coming from crappy synths than a stringed instrument. Nothing like Rhoads Era Ozzy or Sabbath sound.

Its not just the guitar tone, it is the overall MIX.
