Gibson did this as a feature of their guitars. It serves no function. Binding taller than the frets is installed and then between frets is leveled to fretboard surface. Then the frets are crowned and polished and this leaves the small "bumps" of binding at the end of each fret. Traditionalists crave them. Actually they can be counterproductive for players-the high "E" can get caught between the fret and nib, because as time goes by, the two materials can gap enough-especially for slinky strings.Anonymous
MODS- I would like to contend that this is a succinct definition. Make it a default sticky-when a question on what are nibs comes up.
My initial reaction was to say "Use the damned search!"--but, that is not a very welcoming way to greet newer folks. In general the search here is pretty forgiving. But, yes, it would be less irritating if such a post started with," Well, I gave the search engine 3 tries, and......" If a regular in any of the forum categories asked, then maybe the "Use the ........" would be appropriate. The long, and now, thank your choice of a higher power, "Sable," thread is dead. It was sad, and I hope it has been deleted so it cannot be resurrected.O'L
