You may well be able to feather the red by

1. using some more brown colour near the edge.
2. spraying some amber over the top to make the transition more orange

This photo shows how red and how far the red on the original finish of a burst really was.

I still agree with this approach, and again don’t try to get there all in one step.

Man its so hard to tell with your shitty pictures. Everything just looks so bright. It probably looks okay in real life. Will that finish fade in the sun?

Dave, thanks for showing me this pic.
Randall and Dave-I'm out of amber. What I have left to work with is a full can of tobacco brown and about 3/4 can of cherry red.
andreww- I'll take some pics tomorrow in natural light and use a real camera instead of a 4 year-old Blackberry.

BUMP

Here's where I'm at with the top. The back and neck are finished.

actually i think it looks quite good. in fact, i think the polished clear will give you exactly what you want, but for the next time, consider all of the above tips, as these guys know what they're talking about. the 'problem' with rattle cans is not the lack of quality in the paint, as I can't tell where there is any, nor in the finish you can get, because i have seen some really remarkable things with rattle cans in many different settings. but, with everything in life, if you assess what you have to deal with and learn to work with what you have, you can get creative once you understand any shortcomings and end up with terrific results. 're rattle cans, it is good to realize from the get-go that the draw backs are basically that you can't vary much about them, except as noted---the temperature. you can't adjust the nozzle in pattern or volume. you can't adjust the paint mixture. and you can't adjust the pressure to speak of. knowing that, play with some samples and learn to work around these facts, and you may be surprised at what can be achieved. nozzles on todays products as a rule are far better than those of 'back in the day', and you may even be able to get better performance nozzles for spray cans.

at any rate, i think you did an excellant job and need to carry on, my fellow newbie.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the feedback. What I've realized about rattle cans is how important temperature is, and actually rattling the hell out of the can. I think my biggest accomplishment with this project so far is that I've slowed things down to a steady pace. Looking back through this thread, I can see almost every problem has been directly related to me rushing the process.
Thanks again, lads! :dude:
