Id love to try the 50's style wiring after hearing about what an effect it can have on the sound) but I dont know if its possible with what I want to do......

Even though I have been playing guitar for approx 40 years I must say that I am a total novice and totally uneducated in anything technical, so please explain in simple language or draw images that a child could understand, as some of the posts on the forum with "caps, ties, harness, 500k pots, bla bla is a foreign language to me
For example ...whats the difference between using 500k pots to using 250k?

I am left handed ( but string the guitar right handed) I have always played Teles but recently decided to buy a 1996 korean made*Epihone standard plus top Les Paul.
The guitar is wonderful to play but sounds a little dull at times.

I am thinking of having the SD Pearly gates set fitted to the guitar in the future and would like to hear your wisdom of what I should change before that ?
Do I need new pots, wires and capasitors ?
If so what do i need ? What type? What do you recommend ? ( i know that if i change stuff i should include the switch and input jack too).

I REALLY do NOT wish to drill in the guitar to fit new pots etc, and then have to buy new tone/vol knobs etc due to the "USA/ Europen" sizing differences ,so please keep that in mind.

This however is just part of my question......and now it gets complicated...
I would also like to disable one tone and one volume control so that both pick ups ( and combined middle selection) run*on the same tone and volume controls ( like a telecaster ) Im so used to this after 40 years of Tele playing that its weird and confusing having these "extra tone & volume controls"

Can anyone draw me a SIMPLE wiring diagram for it so that I could try to do this. (remember that its a left handed guitar.....if that matters at all?)

I have seen a wiring diagram on the seymor duncan website but it was still unclear and confusing to me!
I opened up the back of my MIK 1996 and took these photos.
I have already mailed people like "Jonesy" and "Martinsixstring" but have not had any replies.

I recall reading previously that those diagrams require a special switch.

Hi-Pass Filter trick

I had a revelation today. It's so simple yet so usable. I don't like the HPF's because, although they're cool for using your volume knob like a gain knob, or a clean/crunch adjustment, I often play clean jazzy solo stuff with the tone control down. The problem I have is when you've got the tone knob down, and you're working the volume knob, you get a crappy sound because at the tone knob you're cutting the highs, while on the volume side you're letting the highs pass through while reducing the lows. You're sucking "tone" from both ends. If you have a neck single coil it's even worse. Here's my solution:

Instead of having the Hi-Pass cap jumping across the switch hot lug and the volume output lug, I run it through the tone pot. First, the wire that leads to the tone knob has to be coming from the switch hot (1st lug) not the output (center lug) and the tone knob has to be wired in the stock "modern factory guitar" fashion, with the wire from the pot going to the center lug of the tone pot, and the capacitor going from the right lug to ground. This leaves the left lug of the tone pot open. We will use that left lug. The little capacitor that jumps the two lugs on the volume pot needs to be removed from the switch hot lug only leave it connected to the center lug. Finally jump a wire from that open lug on the tone pot to the newly disconnected capacitor wire.

*Here's what it does:
When you have the tone knob all the way up, there's no change. The pickup hot is feeding 100% through the Hi-Pass cap to the center lug, and everything is as it was. But as you turn the tone pot down, the Hi-Pass cap becomes less and less "connected" to the pickup hot (due to the tone pot's resistance increasing) and therefore allows less and less "Hi-Pass" filtering to occur. Eventually, when the tone knob is all the way down, the Hi-Pass is disengaged. I did it today on a RG550 and it's awesome. It now makes the tone knob totally usable even when you're also playing with the volume knob! If anyone can tell me that there's a problem with this, I'm glad to listen, but I don't think there is. If it's been invented before, I appologize! Theoretically, I imagine that a 500k tone pot is ideal, since you want as little coloration as possible when the tone pot is at "10" but I don't think it really matters.

I looked all over for this, a Gibson Les Paul Traditional PRO (1)

Makes the humbucker into a single coil (the inner coils). They basically short the green and whites to ground.

Hi, I want to try 50's wiring in my 2016 Gibson LP Trad. It is currently wired 'modern'. I had a look at the diagrams on the first page. I am under the impression that I only need to move the cap to the lug where the switch is wired and I can leave the tone pot as is (modern style). I like the idea of independent volume controls, I often use the middle position but would like to control the blend of the pickups rather than having a master volume control. I have a done a mock up of what I am thinking, would this work? Thanks

That will work yes. Read somewhere in this thread that you should unground the third tab on the vol pots as well. Something about tone suck with all that grounding going on. That was mentioned about using two vols with one master vol though. Maybe you won't need to do that since you have no master vol.

Is it possible to do phase reversal with a push/pull pot on the tone instead of the volume? I have a 2 humbucker Epi with single volume and single tone and picked up some new electronics. I am looking to do a phase reverse on the tone knob when both are engaged in the middle toggle position.

So far, everything I've come across with a setup like this has the phase shift with the push/pull on the volume pot, or in conjunction with doing split coil, and usually with a 2V+2T setup. I was trying to search through here, but cannot find the specific setup I'm looking for, or at least not yet.

I spent the day studying some diagrams to see if I can't figure out the wiring, and I decided to draw my own. I think I got all the right connections made to do the phase reverse on the neck pickup, and that should kick in when both are selected (middle toggle position), without affecting it when the neck is selected on its own. I would love to have some feedback on this, to verify if it is going to work or if I need to make some tweaks. Thanks!

Interesting question here. I'm building a 2017 Les Paul Classic that I got from stratosphere on ebay. What I'm looking for would be similar to 50's wiring, but with one customization. I would need one push/pull pot for a blower/blow thru switch. Pulled out, this pot would send the signal from the bridge humbucker straight to the jack, bypassing ALL other electronics. Is this possible? I think it should be fairly simple, right?

This is the wiring diagram for a coil "Tapped" Humbucker or other pickup (not coil split) specifically the Zhangbucker "Splat" mod. I have had a few requests for this diagram and thought it might be useful to some people so I am posting it here. My default wiring method is full Humbucker mode when push pull is in. Coil tap is activated when push pull is pulled up/out. See NOTE: off to side of diagram. Splitting coil is different, that is where one coil is shut off in a Humbucker by shunting series link to ground. Tapped is different where another lead is added to a coil and can "Tap" to select lower wind strength from a coil. Anyways hope this is useful, this diagram will also work with a Tapped single coil pickup as well.

Hello and good day!

I currently have a Fender Custom Shop Strat that has the Clapton Mid Boost circuit and the TBX tone control with a custom wound set of Klein 59' single coil pickups. Easily the greatest and most versatile guitar I've ever played or owned. The only thing I would like to change is I rarely ever use switch positions #2 and #4 and would like to install a dp/dt toggle to switch between having those two position in series and parallel. I've seen quite a few threads on different forums saying you can do it with a super switch, with push pull pots and toggle switches, the only problem I find is sifting thru the BS and opinions and finding actual working diagrams has been futile at best. Is there anyone who can help me create a wiring diagram that will allow me to do this?
I attached a diagram of the Clapton boost with TBX control, again I would like to add a DPDT toggle switch to change between in series and parallel in positions #2 & #4. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi All,
I want to wire a three-pickup Les Paul with the Peter Frampton wiring. I contacted Gibson and they supplied me some documentation but there's some details missing.

The Frampton wiring works like this :

The diagram above and the two images below are both from Gibson.

I also got the following from a Frampton Les Paul owner. This is how his guitar is wired by Gibson. There's a fourth capacitor barely visible underneath the black heat shrink on the lower left pot.

What I'm missing is the value for the four capacitors in the circuit. The defacto standard values Gibson uses is .022mF. Does anybody know the values for the four in the Frampton LP?

Can any of the wiring gurus tell me how the extra .047 caps wired to the lugs would affect the tone? I'm wondering why Gibson added these for the Frampton model and whether or not it makes sense to play with their values.
