So the company I am working for is closing its doors and I will be unemployed come next Friday. I've been offered a job by an old boss who is willing to pay me more than I currently make (about $5,000 per year). Problem is that the commute is about 170 miles per day. I will most likely accept the offer. I've not had any other call backs on jobs in the last 5 weeks anyway. I did a fuel analysis and will definatly be getting a new vehicle as my RX-8 is a 89 octane gas guzzler (14 MPG). Here is the monthly added cost for me to accept this job (just in gas).

Keep the RX-8 = $922 per month:wow:
New 24 MPG car = $417 per month:shock:
New 30 MPG car = $282 per month:Ohno:
New 35 MPG car = $202 per month:(
New 45 MPG car = $114 per month:hmm::) I can live with that.

I just thought that this was very interesting and would share.

I sell MINI Coopers, and every customer that I talk to gets around 45-47 interstate mileage. That's about the same as a Prius but a lot more fun. If you have a dealer close you should look into that. I helped a lady figure out what she would save in gas going from a Lincoln Aviator to a MINI S. We figure a conservative 33 mpg gallon average in the "S", and she would save $250 per month, and that was only driving 50 miles a day!!!!!

Thanks for that Jomo !!! I can't really see myself driving something like a Civic hybrid but I think the Mini's are cool.

I wish I could fit in a MINI. I would love to have one of those.

Oddly enough, the wife and I are adding a used RX8 to the stable. She found a great deal on one with the automatic trans(she can't drive a stick). She loves it, I love it, just gotta keep the right pedal quiet.

They really are great cars (with the exception of the gas milage). I have an '04 which was prone to engine problems. Many people got new engines as for me, mine did not need a new engine but they had to mess with the fuel / oil mixture which gave me a drop in my gas milage. Good luck with yours. I'm sure you will love it.

How do you figure this out with gas cost? I'm not very good figuring it out with car and gas before I buy a car. :io:

Here is what I did. I believe it is correct. I'll give the example of my current vehicle.

My RX-8
Tank size 15.9 gallons
MPG - 14
Gas price - $4.03 (89 octane)
Miles per tank - 222.6 (tank size x MPG)
Cost to fill tank - $64.08 (Gas price x tank size)

Once you figure out the above, you then need to know the ammount of miles you would be driving per day. Mine is 170 miles. If you divide the miles per day by miles per tank (170 / 222.6) this will give you a % of total gas used (76% in this case). Take that % and multiply by the cost to fill the tank ($48.70). Now I know it will cost me $48.70 per day to drive to and from work. To get my monthly figure, I just multiplied the cost per day ($48.70) times 24 (subtract weekends). This number came to $1,168.8. I then subtracted the gas that I currently go thru every day to and from work which would bring my grand total to $922.80

Hope that was not to confusing.
