Why the difference in 1x12 cab sizes? Some are 15x16x10, and others are huge, like 20x18x11. What is the design theory for a bigger cab?

I want a pine 1x12, but can't decide which size to get. The small one, or the big one. I will play a Telecaster and a Les Paul through it with a Vintage 30 speaker. British 60s rock, such as Stones, Led Zep, Yardbirds, Humble Pie.

I can see a few reasons. One being the larger cabs would give a less boxey sound and allow for larger heads to be placed on top. The smaller ones would give a more compressed, focused and boxey tone, but would be easier to carry around. I'm sure their is quite a bit more to it than that, but that should get the topic started.

I have a pine 1x12 that is on the large size. It no doubt sounds to ME better than a smaller plywood/birch 1x12.

I've had a few different Eminence, a Hellatone and at the moment a Weber 12A125A in it. All sound great, just different.

Check South Valley Vintage amps website. Lots to choose from, tolex and grill options.

The larger cab will have a larger baffle face ...it will give you more lower full sound and also tends to increase the efficiency ....also if it is sealed box it will extend the lower frequency.....Jim

Many 1 x 12s are undersized because its assumed that space is a limited commodity to the buyer. It does affect the sound though - I was very surprised by the quality of sound from a full size 1 x 12.

I do not like the boxy sound most small 1X12 cabs or combos give one bit at all. My old Mesa Boogie MK III was a small combo with a 12 and sounded boxy as hell. That's why I no longer have it. But then, I wanted a light, portable extension cab for one of my later amps, and bought a 1X12 cab off ebay new made by some outfit called Crystal Cabs. Man, it was and is beautiful sounding, with lots of resonance And it is only 18"X17"X11". I liked it so well that I ordered another for use with my head (and the other speaker). Unfortunately, they don't seem to make these anymore. Sad, because they were an exception to the rule.

Do a search on eBay for 1x12 cabs. There are at least two one-man operations that build dovetailed pine 1x12 cabs in different sizes, for a reasonable price.
