I wouldn't say their better, I just prefer actives and think that batteries should only be in pedals (or active EQ's in basses
)

No guitar can touch the 'crystal clear' depth of my wife's BC Rich Bich Metal Web with EMG 81 & 85. (and talk about 'sustain'...plucked a note last week and it is still ringing. 
)
I'm also a fan of Seymour Duncans but they are a different beast all together...a crunchier sound. I have them installed in a late 80's Fender metal strat.
If I had to pick one....EMGs....more versatile.
