Curious, why didn't Gibson do an official run of 60th anniversary 58's in 2018?

I seem to recall them doing a 50th anniversary R8, but does anyone know why they chose to forgo the 60th? Seems odd for Gibson to miss such an opportunity as they've clearly cashed in by doing all the various '59 and '60 - 60th anniversary reissues.

Least popular of the Big 3 Bursts, don't have the flash of '59s like the crazy tops.

Many of the 2018 R8's were flame tops though. Maybe not R9 monster tops, but like you said '58 is one of the original burst years.

And when have you known Gibson not to capitalize on even the smallest change in the historic line.

Yeah my 2018 R8 has a nice subtle flame, think page number one, it’s a honey lemon fade so any similarity ends there lol. I am going to scribble ‘60th anniversary’ somewhere on the COA.

Very cool - Didn't know those existed.

It's interesting that those have dark backs. Wasn't that a big feature/selling point with the 60th anniversary R9's?

mainly because James C tookover in 2018. The 60th anniv new specs came at that time for the 59. they should retrofit all Rs with these specs IMO.

I think they should make all the 58s badass, like true to specs, all aged. a few 58 GT. and for burst light flame tops/plain tops

As reissues go,... i lean toward the R8. I have one R7 and a R9, but i have two R8s. If i venture for another Historic it will also be another R8. I haven't really found a R0 that i had to have......... yet. Though i have been tempted by many R8s.

Both are 2014 R8s

Got love for the R8, my next will also be another `R8, been searching for 6 months for a candidate, but with the lockdown travelling has been an issue, plus prices took a sharp hike from previous years numbers, I have bought a good R8, and really want a true historic spec with double cnc carve but needs to to be 8lbs and have a killer top.

Seems like a missed opportunity on Gibson's part.

Not that I'm complaining, as it allowed me to get a better deal on my '18, but they could have easily done a '58 style poker chip and printed 60th anniversary in the COA booklet and charged an extra $6-800.

I mean it's not like they had to create a new model.

2018 brought about the switch to the tall skinny frets and if I'm not mistaken, all the 2018's had TH plastics. So basically the only other thing missing was the Luxe PIO caps.

The chubby necks as well the 59s were intermediate 60S more modern profile thats why they have a bit more popularity.

As @abracadaben said, JC didn’t take the helm at Gibson until October 2018. When he came onboard in they shifted their marketing approach and decided to do the 60th anny approach. But it was too late for the 2018 R8s.
