Hmm, why is Led Zeppelin famous?

Could be they have the 2nd most selling album, of all times in the US, Led Zeppelin IV at 23 million + copies sold, and 3 others in the double digit multi platinum levels. 111.5 MILLION certified units sold in US, and 200-300 million sold world-wide.

In other words, People dig their music, a lot.

Led Zeppelin still today rules American FM stations, apparently the songs are still current with a vast age group of listeners, I was 10 when the first one came out, and thanks to a few uncles I am still a fan today.

I think Led Zep is famous for the same reason the Beatles are famous.
They both were integral in helping to create a new music genre. They may not have created the genre, but they were there in it's infancy. They did what they wanted, created their own style.
Page even went BEYOND the guitar playing and and was an innovator in the mixing and producing of their studio sound. He was a genius.

The OP mentions Gary More and his melodic playing. I would not describe Page as a melodic player although you could list MANY Led Zep songs that are. I would describe Page's playing as more compositional than melodic. So BEWARE, not like Gary More. Expect something different when you listen to Page or I think you will be disappointed.

If you listen to this and still don´t get it, then you are never going to like the band. I think that is a perfect starting point. If you like it, the first seven albums of the band are glorious. You can listen them in order if you want to see how they evolved.

They are so loved because they made extraordinary music, and were one of the first musicians to play Hard Rock.

He might be a young fellow. And even if he isn´t, I´m sure we all have arrived late to some really classic band.

I always figured it was because of their big cocks. In the seventies Led Zeppelin was well known for raising really large roosters and chickens at the Bron-Yr-Aur cottage in Whales. It has to be their cocks, what else could it be.

Well, Plant was known to suck on a few fags and doobies back stage before a concert.

Page once blew a tranny at the race track.

I never knew they had large cocks.

In my youth, I thought Zep was so overrated. Sabbath was far superior in my mind. Then as a college boy finishing up my undergrad degree in the mid 80s, I really got in to Zep. Still in to them as well.

Sure, Sabbath is my favorite, but Zep is terrific too and I consider some of their stuff among my favorites (when I switched to cds in 1991, I bought 5 cds, 2 of which were Zep).

Yeah, Page is certainly not the most melodic player (esp when compared to guys like Michael Schenker) but his playing is still most amazing. I don't know where he got that stuff (well, ok, probably from drugs) but WOW WEEE!

I personally think that Zep penned the first heavy rock song "Whole Lotta Love" but Sabbath was the first heavy rock band. "Innagaddadavida?" To me, Iron Butterfly was more acid rock (although that album/song is often cited as the first heavy metal album/song)--just listen to the fuzz tone.

Anyways, my .02 (and probably worth a lot less).

I do believe the sincerity of the OP. I don't think he's trolling. I don't want a flame war, so instead of mentioning any names all I'll say is that there are some huge artists that I just don't get it. Could be the same for OP and Zep.

I will say that if it came out today that any popular, admired, modern band lifted as many songs as Zepplin did, they would be completely shunned, and written off as hacks. But for some reason Zepplin is still admired, even though some of their most poplar songs were direct and blatant ripoffs of lesser known blues artists without any credit whatsoever.

Normally i read these "so and so lifted this song from so and so artist" things, and I say to myself, eh it's close but I don't see the blatant rip off everyone else hears, more coincidental then anything. But in Zepplin's case, some are literal note for note, steal the entire song but make it rock ripoffs.

None of this is to say that the players themselves aren't great players, or that Page didn't innovate on alot of fronts. But in today's world if this was to happen, The artists would definitely not be looked upon in the same light.
