Cold tubes don't conduct.Whether you call it a Stand-By or Standby or whatever the switch has a purpose in a tube amplifier. It switches the B+ (B-Plus) voltage on and off. This voltage is applied to the plates of the tubes so they amplify. When you flip the POWER switch on you should have the Standby switch in the Standby position and only after the tubes have had a chance to warm up (a minute or two) should you apply B+ to the tubes. Use Standby while you're on a break at a gig to be kind to your 6L6 or 6V6 output tubes. Throwing B+ on the plate of a cold tube actually abuses the tube...trust me.
A Side Bar...
The stand by switch is simply a spare Power Switch.
Kinda like the extra buttons you get sewed to the inside of your shirt.
And just as useful.
A Side Bar...
ever notice that the shirt manufacturers who provided extra buttons
sewn into the shirt AND yet never got used?
It was only the cheap shit shirts that never gave you extra button(s) and
it seems like I always had a button fall off.
I usually pull the cord from the amp side, and it doesn’t pop. Just enough to disconnect the tip, then pull the cord from the guitar. No need to adjust the volume.I turn the volume control down to switch guitars. Can't hear the pops then.
that's all well and fine, but some volume controls can be a little tricky to set blindly. my 2204 goes from Zero to Murder in an almost imperceptible distance on the volume knob. (the MV is worse than the preamp, but still....)for just switching guitars i'd probably just mute with the tuner if i have my board. if i'm plugged straight in, i just yank it out real fast and plug the other one in as smoothly as it'll go.I turn the volume control down to switch guitars. Can't hear the pops then.
but people can do it however they like.
Well, to put a positive spin on all that; the wig makers, hair replacement people, dentists,You know that boat won't float.... There will be screaming, crying, pulling hair out, gnashing of teeth, self flagellation, PMs to all the Top Men 24/7, goodbye threads from hell, more goodbye threads from hell, I'm really leaving this time threads from hell, and then it'll get real bad...... Never underestimate the dumbassery of the poochie lipped....
