Why is it called a stand by switch?

Shouldn’t it be called a “tube warm up switch” since it has nothing to do with beer breaks? Shouldn’t you turn volume down and NOT switch to “stand by” during beer break?
Should you switch to stand by before turning amp off or doesn’t it matter?

Yes but actually no.

The standby function actually has a lot to do with getting the amp ready to ‘stand by’ maybe more than warming up the tubes.

Some tube amps omit the standby feature altogether.

What does “get ready to stand by” mean? Pretty funny LT.

I had an OD-100 that labeled the standby switch as:

STAND BY
STAND BACK

What do beer breaks have to do with amplifiers?

For that matter, which beer break is this?

Post # 6 includes links to articles on stand by switches, and why they aren't needed (and may possibly be bad for an amp.)
Also, shouldn't ten years here be long enough to learn how comments work at MLP, and other forums? :D
Didn't see any bullying, but smart ass comments are SOP.

I don't use the stand by switches on any amps that have them. All power or no power :jam:

Huh? Who's a "big shot", and where is said "big shot" giving him a hard time?

He asked this question, and not without a bit of humor on his own:

Shouldn’t it be called a “tube warm up switch” since it has nothing to do with beer breaks? Shouldn’t you turn volume down and NOT switch to “stand by” during beer break?

"beer breaks"?

How am I bullying when I say (again with a humor like his own) "I'm on my beer break".

Oh, the bully me.

pfft.

I always used standby during breaks.

After turning the power off is when I also switch to standby, for the next time.

Early tweed amps generally had tube rectifiers. They take a minute to start making power, so standby switches weren’t needed.

I think by the time Fender was running 4 X 6L6 power amp sections, starting ‘em slow was more a concern.
