Why don't winders have before/after clips on their website?

Wouldn't it be nice if winders did this - play a stock guitar through an amp and then play that same guitar through that same amp on the same settings but with their pickups? Then again with a different pickup. Why don't winders do this? From a buyer's perspective, it would be nice to cut out some of the uncertainty that comes with buying pickups on-line and hear how each different pickup sounds through the same rig. Thoughts?

Bare Knuckle does this, to some extent, although not for all pickups. I found it quite useful to go back and forth hearing the same couple of bars with different pickups. Seymour Duncan as well.

I really like the latest clip Throbak uploaded of their SLE-101 plus, but it would have been much better still if they they'd done the same music with the SLE-101 and DT-102.

I don't know why some winders don't show you their work bench, winding process, works in progress, etc.,...

This is true as well, I don't want anyone to reveal any secrets, but I always like to see a little of the process.

My guess is that the original manufacturers might not like being the "before" and would pursue legal action.

I have found that if I call, they tend to be extra helpful in trying to find the right combination for me.

I do agree it would be nice though!

I have have wolfe has and so has Jon. As to why we do not all do before and after there are roughly 300 different types of pickups now from every corner of the world, cost and time would be the most obvious.

Just a demo of all pups wound would do, even thats alot of work. Its nice to hear the different winds made by the maker, a creative description is always a fun read but backed up with clips... well id prefer to sit and read/listen to a good winders work online than watch a film, its entertaining, educational and i love it.

Say what? I webcam my shop frequently. People can watch us work. :)

On the downside, more than one winder has asked me "hey, what were you doing while XXX'ing, what is that tool you're using?... ohhh THAT"S how you do XXX."
meaning..yeah... some are looking for trade secrets...

The other problem is some of us specialize in almost all custom winds. While we do have some stuff off the shelf most of the time, well I do anyway, adjust things for different tones or guitars. In other words I would have to do the same set of tests for at the least 7 different guitars. PRS, SG, LP, JR, Strat, Tele, and Vs as well as explorers etc..... I agree it would be nice to put them all in and hit a studio for a d ay or 2 but then you get well these were done on pro gear with fx and filters or these were done on you tube so the sound........ Just the nature of the beast. In time we will be doing some stuff but not against other winders but maybe against the stock stuff we run across everyday.

What I'd like to see more of is this:

http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk...vintage/mothers_milks/mothers_milks-clean.mp3

http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk...eries/59_slab_board/59_slab_boards-cleans.mp3

http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk...es/62_veneer_board/62_veneer_boards-clean.mp3

Etc.

Makes it much easier to focus in on the subtle differences between your offerings. I like the fact that the playing is very simple, so you don't confound it with whether or not you like the music. If anything I think it's good business because people will spend more time on your website and sooner or later order something. :) I know it's worked on me with Bare Knuckle.

Another interesting format is what Tyler uses on their website. They have pro players demo several of their pickups (with soundclips) and then have their comments on each of them, what they like or like less, what does this pickup do particularly well...

Yeah it would be nice to be able to get to that point. We are trying to but looks like it will be a bit before we get there. But yeah I like what Tim did.

I think a boutique winder who had amassed the resources to do all this stuff wouldn't be boutique anymore. He/she would be Seymour Duncan. ;)

Duncan has an extensive collection of clips to compare sounds.

Edit - Also, I should read other comments before posting my own.

What a lot of us rely on is clips by you the end user. When I get back to California beginning of next year i will be doing clips with LP, Srats and teles. But because studio time costs to some extent they will come out at various times. We are looking at doing. Clean all 3 positions, gain all 3 positions and for the higher dc winds heavy gain situations as well as real life use for some quick jams in a band setting live in the studio. But that is 6 months away.

Good Idea , that I think a lot people have over looked. I don't think that A Winder needs to show every pickup in every guitar, . Maybe just an LP, to give a demo of the type of change in sound you might get . side by side compairisons are always good. :thumb:

I know a winder that spent a great deal of time selling, talking ,promoting ,making videos....everything except actually Winding Bobbins. Kind of a catch 22 thing. By the time you are big enough to make clips and videos of everything, you are sitting behind a desk.

I have clips on my site but as I've said before a few times, I'm not a big believer in their ability to tell you about a pickup, not only because of all the variables involved, but because clips never tell you how a pickup feels, how it responds to your touch.

Plus a little guy like me has no money for sound and video equipment.
