well yesterday my buddies grandmother was killed right in front of my f#@king house. i live out in the country on the corner of the center of town crossroads. anyway my buddies dad was bringing his mother to the doctors for some tests and when they crossed the intersection an 83 year old woman driving a gmc sierra ran a stop sign and t boned them right at the grandmothers door. she died on the way to the hospital. what makes this worse is that the woman NEVER hit the brakes even after the impact she kept going and pushed the car into the grass. the sierra didnt leave a single tire mark.

why don't they test these people after a certain age??? 8 years ago i watched a 90 year old woman kill her best friend who went into the ice cream shop. the woman driving somehow hit the gas and drove through the front window squashing her friend into the counter. WTF????????

I'm sorry for the loss.
I believe that is horrible.
I think they should be testing at about 80 every two years or so. I don't know how many accidents I've nearly been in due to a very elderly person pulling out in front of me.

I am truly sorry for the loss. My prayers go out to the family.

i wholeheartedly agree!!! i got real lucky a year ago at a rest area,,,was reaching into my car when i was slammed by an elderly man who had backed out his space down the way a bit and never let off the gas pedal. if he had hit me first instead of hitting my car first, it would have taken my legs off. DMV really does need to have more frequent testing done for over 80 drivers!

I think ALL drives should have to retake a written and road test every 4 years to be sure they are up on current traffic law and to show they can still function behind the wheel. Once over 75 I would make it every 2 years. I also think that motor vehicle drivers should have to have an annual physical examination just like pilots do.

Personally I'm more worried about the 15 year olds they let get licenses here in KS, soccer mom's on their cell phones, and drunk rednecks behind the wheel, than I am with elderly drivers.

Sorry to hear the bad news..
Not only are the very old a menace on the roads, but even more of a menace are the under twenty five year old drivers who are responsible for even more deaths.. These guys know it all and think they are invincible and carreer round the roads like morons. I think all very old and young drivers should be governed to a speed limit and have to display a sign that says so.
My wife and I were driving home one day and waited at a crossroad to turn right.. ( Don't forget we are on the left in the UK ) My wife was driving and some little arsehole comes up behind her as she's starting to turn.. Pulls on her inside and overtakes her whilst she's turning onto a major road.
Fuck was I mad.. I grabbed hold of the horn and flashed him on main beam.. He then took off like shit of a chrome shovel..
About a minute later, we come to another crossroad and sure enough who's there.. Master wanker and his car completely smashed up, as he'd pulled out in front of an oncoming car who had right of way. He was standing there with his crappy little toy car with spoilers and a huge exhaust, with blood running down his face and his clothes all torn... We just drove up and I pointed to my head as in the idiot sign, pointed to his car and laughed, gave him a big wankers sign and drove off.
toss-off_smiley.gif
... ( The people in the other car were ok, or I would have stopped )
Charitable Christian?? Yeah and pigs might fly... Fuck him. I couldn't care a less if he bled to death.. He put my wifes life on the line.
A week or so later it came to light that the guy he'd ran into and who's car he wrecked was someone I knew and a few months later I spoke to the guy. Evidently this lad was so lippy and non caring about what he'd done he not only went off with a bleeding head, but a smack in the nose too.

:laugh2: You are turning right and a guy pulls up along side you ( drivers side ) and pulls out to turn right also.. The problem being that both roads are both single lane traffic.

Weve got more of our fair share of those round here unfortunately, 20 year old ford escorts with spoilers and kits off of LeMans cars and a baked bean can for an exhaust conversion all in primer grey and sanded white...

Dont suppose you saw that programme last night, Jason Plato (British Touring Car driver) taking round 4 or 5 of the above mentioned I know it you dont idiots around a race track, they didnt even know how to turn into a corner let alone drive at speed. They were all made to feel really stupid and inadequate drivers when they got out too...:laugh2:

Phil, that is karma writ large and brought a smile to the dial (the bit about the bleeding head and the smack on the nose).

Luckily, in this country, we have speed limits for provisional drivers (i.e. mostly young) where they must display a "P Plate" that has their maximum speed printed on it. There are also laws to limit the type of car they are allowed to drive, no turbos or large displacement V8's. Additionally, our seniors must take a driving test every year past a certain age (think it's 80).

Although these measures are a step in the right direction, it is still too easy to obtain a drivers licence in most parts of the world. Proper, intensive training is the only way, where they are shown the actual consequences of their lunatic ways.

Rick.

No I didn't Big_dawg. Pity, as I would have loved to have seen that..:dude:
It's not the older drivers who are a menace round here, but the younger ones.
As the saying goes.. They have reached an age where they are young enough to know everything. :laugh2:. Having said that though, there are also quite a few sensible ones too.. Thank Heavens!

A bit like widdlers syndrome really I suppose..:laugh2: Ever noticed the average age of fretboard diarrhoea sufferers? It seems to be a thing one grows out of as one gets older. I know that for a fact as I meet many ex pupils.

myinstrument, please excuse my bad manners, I am very sorry for your friends loss, I know what it is to lose a family member.

Yep, we got those here too, and it's getting worse.

Wish they all had to go through the pro driver test from hell, it'd wipe the smarmy grin off a few of those faces.
Jeez I sound old... Aww damn, I am.:laugh2:

I agree that we need more testing for everybody, especially very young and old. Of course, I can say that now that I'm 26. :laugh2: But seriously, there's a lot of bad drivers out there, most who just don't pay enough attention, but then you do have the kids who don't think that anything bad will happen and only old people who don't know what's going on. I totalled my mom's car when I was 18, and it was my fault, because I wasn't paying attention. Nobody was hurt, but it was definitely an alert that you can't take driving for granted.

As for old people driving, my grandmas were the best examples of two extremes when they were still alive. My mom's mom was as alert and as sharp as could be right up till the end, and she lived to be 86. But she quit driving when she was in her early 70s, just because she didn't want people to group her with other old people who are bad at driving.

My dad's mom on the other hand was one of the most stubborn people. She would never admit that she couldn't drive well. One day, she went through a stop sign when there was already someone in the intersection. She T-boned them and pushed them out of the intersection. She didn't stop until she got out of the intersection. She saw them get out of their car, so she figured nothing was wrong, so she drove on to church! :wow: She had a Cadillac (of course) and she hit a young kids little cheap car, so it totalled it without leaving a scratch on the Cadillac. My poor dad had to talk to the cops when they showed up at the church. He had to beg them not to take her to jail.

Another good example of both young and old was one night when I was one my way home, and the roads had a layer of ice about an inch thick. I saw headlights coming out of the ditch on my side, facing the wrong way. I pulled over and jumped down there. It was about a 15 foot, 60 degree drop. This old lady (as she puts it), "was getting really into my religious music, and the next thing I know, I'm on the other side of the road. I swerved and ended up here!" Then when I told her I'd call the police to get a tow truck, she said, "You don't think I can just drive out?" :wow: And then while I was waiting with her, some 16 kid and his girlfriend go flying by on the ice and flip into the other ditch. They were both cut up pretty bad, but their biggest concern? They didn't want their parents to know, because they weren't suppose to be seeing each other...

I shouted at one to fucking well slow down near my cottage once.. Mr big and his buddies then stops the car.. Unfortunately they didn't see I had my male German shepherd with me.. They then drove of at double quick time.
I don't ever start trouble or interfere with other people, but had they surrounded me, I would have told the dog to attack.. No hesitation..And boy would he have taken them appart. This guy is solid muscle with no fear.

He'd take anyone to pieces who came near my daughter or wife.

Our bitch Inka is just coming up to the age for guarding.. German shepherds aren't really used for guards until they at least two years old. Django is four and Inka is just two.
