I try to emulate my tone.

That elusive one - in my head. I never quite get it but I keep trying. once I'm 99% there, I discover there's something else I'm needing or looking for.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I have never tried to make my guitar sound like anyone else's. I adjust my gear to sound the way I like it and that's how I play.

Some kind of conglomeration/Happy medium between these three doodz. Late 60s, to mid 70s Gibsons. NMV Marshalls, G12ms.

I don't particularly try to emulate that much, but I wouldn't be too sad if I was able to get the smooth beefiness of Baroness' tone combined with the aggressive nature of early Mastodon. That'd be pretty neat.

That is one of my favorite albums. -I originally bought it for the cover.

I get where you're going with this but I have to disagree somewhat.
For me, even if I get good enough to nail those epic solos that I aspire to, I still don't want to sound just like the original artist.
Imitation may be the most sincere form of flattery but I need to get some form of myself in there too. If my cover of Battery doesn't sound like Hammett is playing it, it's because he's not. I am.

I hear ya but, your audience wants to hear it that way :)

When I play for myself, I play my sounds, my way. When I play for people, I play what they pay to hear :) Or, at least as close to it as I can!

Fair enough! If I was a paid musician I'm sure I'd be more inclined to do the same. I have a long road to travel before I'd be ready for that though.

I strive to emulate Stevie Ray Vaughn's tone from his Thrash Metal days with Steve Winwood.

When I play acoustic guitar, I go for emulating more of a delicate easy listening sound. Think Dimebag from Vulgar display tone mixed with Lemmy from Motörhead

:wow: I am sure there is someone. But, it is mostly that haunting tone in my head I try to get out! I will have a trial of new meds to see if that helps.

Depends on the context. Normally I try not to emulate (unless covering), but sometimes I 'secretly' draw on splashes of what inspired me in the past, such as Gilmour or Lifeson when I need to to get me through a wall or over a bump. Those influences were more important earlier, and I still love those guys, but I'd like to paint my own pictures in the long run.

Page is in there, Harrison and others, many I don't even know their names, but I'm such a bottom feeder really, I am not able to channel specific influences articulately. ha ha! "Don't forget to tip your bartender!"

I have my influences but I only ever wanted one tone---my own. And when I finally found it, I had (and have) no intention of letting it go, whether I'm playing my own blues or covering a blues number I happen to love and happens to mean something to me.

That's whether I'm playing alone for myself or playing for people. And I guess I chose the right way, after all. I got the unexpected proof Monday night.

I was in a kind of blues competition, aimed at filling out a bill for a benefit blues gig toward the end of this month. The categories were bands, soloists, and vocalists. Since I don't have my own new band solidified just yet, and since my rhythm section-to-be couldn't make it, I was slid into the competition in the soloist category by the lady who put it together. (She happens to be a friend and urged me to play, anyway.) With three other players who happened to be there, and to know me, agreeing to play with me.

I got a very nice reaction to my little set. But I was stunned beyond belief to learn afterward that I got the most votes of any contestant in any category, from the four judges and from the audience alike. And I was even playing all original songs in the bargain!

I guess maybe I am doing something right, after all. I'm still amazed, actually.

Tone wise

Hendrix
Angus
Iommi
Leigh Stephens
Ron Asheton
Daniel Ash

and a little bit of early Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

I find it is more the way you play that gets the tone than the gear. The gear helps, though.

I'm kinda partial to my own tones actually.
I do, however, like the tones from the late Gary Moore.

I'm very influenced by Michael Schenker and Gary Moore, which also are John Norum's influences so I really like his style too. Can't help sounding European, it's in the blood.:laugh2:
