I remember that magic moment that the new kid in the neighborhood said, "You haven't heard Ozzy's new band?", and played Blizzard of Ozz for me. Since picking up the guitar, I've always tried to work some of Randy Rhoads' biting, fixed wah tone into mine. So, whose tone do you model your own tone after?

My own, but influenced by Phil Keaggy, EVH, Larry Carlton, Skunk Baxter, Denny Diaz, Jay Graydon, Johnny Thunders, Mick Jones, Roy Buchanan, Gary Ricrath, Brian May, and a lot of other better players than me that no one has ever heard of.:)

I use my own based on a base tone of players i like ;) I love Randy's playing but not so much his guitar tone on Blizzard. I emulate his recording techniques for double and triple tracking solos to really mkae them pop in the mix.

I like EVH I and II, RR on DOAMM, early George Lynch, Yngwie's neck pickup strat tone and Gary Moore Corridors of Power era.

Mix of John Frusciante and Jerry Cantrell. I use my Les Paul for Jerry's stuff and my Strat when I want to sound more like John. Jerry plays mostly G&L and fenders but most of the Dirt recordings were recorded with a Les Paul.

slash tone :slash:

well, not really, just the 100 watt Super Lead plexi tone. I dunno why, I'm not looking for EVH tone or anything, I'm just in love with that big old amp :)

I like all sorts of tones - especially with some clarity. anything from almost acoustic sounding jazz box to classic rock. really partial to fat clear tones like you might hear on a Steely Dan song like Aja ...

I just go with what sounds good to me at the time, and that varies greatly.

No-one, really.....

I've always had a sound in my head, and have only recently really achieved it! This was partly due to modding my JVM to sound more open, "classic" and brigher (like my old 2203) - but the last piece in the puzzle was switching to a Les Paul Traditional, about 3 years ago!

My son says my tone is reminiscent of the guys in "The Darkness" - and listening to some of their live clips, I think he has a point!

I don't necessarily subscribe to the idea of "A Tone"

a song with a clean guitar trough a phaser into a chorus, EQ'd to take out a lot of the low end sounds vastly different than a guitar plugged straight in to a cranked tube amp.
Same player, same guitar, same amp different tone.
you need to do what's right for the song

For my own material I try to get the sound that's in my head to come out, for covers I try and get in the ball park of the original

Honestly though, at some of the places I play once he gorilla on the drums joins in, it can be hard to hear well enough to even be able to tell if I've got the OD pedal engaged or not. So forget any subtle nuances of tone

Andy Laroque of King Diamond, especially his solo tone. Warren D Martini, Lynch, etc.

I turn knobs til it sounds good to me. I'm not in touch with the technical side of amps and such to try and copy someone. I used a Fender AmSTd through a Crate 120 with a Rat and a wah in my high school cover bad who did 90
Percent Metallica for Petes sake.

Depends on the guitar and song. On my 335 I just do what sounds good to my ears. On my Lester it's usually some variation of billy gibbons with the ABB mixed in and with a strat it's anyone's guess.

As a new player I am trying to develop my own, but I get my inspiration from Tab Benoit, Tommy Castro, and old Blues players.

I got some good advice from the old-timers when I started up, so I never spent too much time trying to emulate anyone else's sound.

I did study greats like Jimi Hendrix, and Don Felder, and in that context, there was plenty of emulation going on, but the objective was always to incorporate that stuff into my own playing, to make that part of my sound.

That had alot more to do with how I touched the guitar than anything else.

I wish I could, but I also turn the knobs until Im reasonable happy with the sound. I found that its fairly easy with a 500T. With other pickups its harder to find a sound I like...
