Who sounds more SLO ? Jet City or 5150 ?

Just for a bit of fun . . . no need to start an argument.

Which of the two amps do you feel, sounds more like the all-mighty Soldano SLO ?

The Soldano-inspired Jet City 100W, or the original 5150 ?

The Jet City is an obvious candidate.
Mr Soldano himself helped with the design of this amp.
' With two channels of Soldano tone and 100 watts of pure tube power, this amp was made for the big stage.
The Normal channel has plenty of headroom to deliver clear, bright clean tones and can be driven hard enough to get downright raunchy.
The Overdrive channel is the circuit that made Soldano famous. It’s been modeled and imitated, but this is the real-effing-high-gain-deal. ' - from the Jet City site.

The old block letter Peavey 5150 - well, i read many times, in various forums that when Peavey made an amp for Mr. Van Halen, they copied his beloved SLO.
They just revoiced it ever so slightly (and probably added a wee bit more gain), and used cheaper components, to what was used in the SLOs.

So, which one do you feel is more SLO-like in tone and feel/character ?

I cannot say. I have a HR 50. The jet city looks like it has better power and standby switches..

I'd say Jet City but I'm biased.
Before I got my 2 JCA's I read up on what was supposed to be the better choice.
Same dilemma, but as far as I can tell the 5150 is a clone of SLO and they got some stuff wrong, whereas the JCA are 1:1 Mike Soldano SLO tone but Made in China. Same footswitch design too and all. Really. On a JCA it's blue and a SLO it is white. Included with most models.

I've never tried that model Jet City, but its gotta be that, because the 5150 doesn't do it without mods.

Even if the 5150 is more accurate (don't really remember), isn't the JCA100H a lot cheaper?

I've got a JCA2212C combo and a 22H head. Both are supposed to have the SLO circuit with el84's and 20 watts. I find that channel of the amp to be very high gain but more usable than the 5150's I've played (but never owned).

For pure usability and versatitly, I vote Jet City.

Probably not much, because i am asking about the early 90's (now only availible on the 2nd hand market) block letter 5150.

The 90's 5150 can be had for less than $1000.00.

oh, I see. For some reason I remember some JCA100H in EU online stores being priced at about 550USD. Did they make any sort of "cheaper" version, or there just one 100W head?

never played a SLO but my jet city was really fizzy out of the box and sounded like crap until I modded it . I can't imagine that it sounded anything like a SLO
