My favorites are James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, and Izzy Stradlin. There are probably a lot more but these are the ones that I just thought of.

I used to think that the lead guitarist is the coolest. That was until I actually saw a video of Metallica and James Hetfield is just playing these complex riffs while singing. Everybody always talk about Kirk and I do like how he plays and a lot of my favorite solos are from Kirk but James is the backbone of the band and he makes it cool to be a rhythm guitarist. Because of James I feel like I don't have to be the only one playing solos.

So who are your favorite rhythm guitarists?

Tony Macalpine (when he plays with Vai).

Brad Whitford hands down, rock solid playing and always carrying the songs for one of the best bands around.

Anyone can noodle around on solos and fills, but good rhythm playing is not often appreciated.

Brad is not just a great rhythm player. He plays some tasty solos.

Naw, I like me better. In fact, I'm the best rhythm guitarist in my band.:D
:thumb:

Hey, he didn't ask who we thought was the best - "just" favorite.

Call me a narcissist, but I've never heard anything more satisfying than myself "nailing" a rhythm line. I could be doing so backing the greatest guitarists of all time, and I'd still be getting all squirmy over how great I sounded.

If you can't get that feeling from your own playing, why freakin' bother? :hmm:

Cool thread! Us rhythm guys get overlooked a lot! I say Dave Grohl, although he does some of both.

Another nod for Malcolm. All I ever wanted to be as a guitar player. Alas, I fall short :laugh2:

Whitford is a great rhythm player, and I'll second Eef's Izzy Stradlin nod, as well.
OK, now you're back to talkin' "best" rather than "favorite" - obviously, or you'd have cast your lot with me.

One of the best is definitely Kim Simmonds - even though he's great on lead as well. "Tell Mama", "Street Corner Talkin'", "Hellbound Train". He can do one hell of a combination of Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker - 'specially for a white guy.

And do it all on a Walmart guitar:

But hey, let's get serious. You got better than this?

That's rhythm guitar, youngsters.
