i used to feel like a complete moron becuase i play much better without a pick than i do with. when i try to hit certain strings with a pick i sometimes get the wrong one, but with my thumb i am usually acurate, someties i sandwhich my pointer finger with my thumb and middle finger and use that in place of a pick and it works out ok. i like the sharper sound you get with a pick, but i have a difficult time with it.

asside from derek trucks and wes montgomery, who else uses their fingers instead of picks? who here uses fingers?

It depends on the style I'm playing at the time.

Most of the time I use a pick, but when I'm going for more of a 'chicken-pickin' feel with my Tele, I'll lay down the pick and use 3 or four fingers instead.

i still try to use the pick becuase i can see the usefullness of it, but sometimes when i want to get going without all the misses and a lot more hits i will put it in my mouth and go to work with the fingers.

either way i still suck, but its ok cuz i still love it

I go about 25% of my time without a pick. Not much, but there are times when I like/ need it.

As for famous fingerpickers, what about Mark Knopfler?

I understand the awkwardness! I started with an acoustic, so fingers are more natural for me. But it's hard to get the attack and edge of a pick, so I still use both.

I do this. Best of both worlds, with a little compromise. :thumb:

Once you get used to it, it's easy (and fast) to switch from using the pick and finger-picking. You don't get to use the middle finger holding the pick, but you can still get a good groove going with using the remaining fingers (thumb, index, ring).

Or throw the pick to the crowd! Total rockstar move! :laugh2:

Sometimes I prefer fingers and nails, sometimes a pick. I've gone through a couple of periods where I only did one or the other, but I try to practice to be able to do both.

I can't seem to get a hold of that move. I've been dropping and grabbing picks for a long time. Maybe it's time for me to try again.

Sometimes I use a pick, sometimes I don't.
I tend not to when I play classical or slide.
Sometimes on other blues stuff.

I also use hybrid picking if I need fingers in a song that otherwise uses a pick, or vice versa.

Start by placing the butt end of the pick against the finger joint. As you curl the finger, it starts to lock itself in. Doesn't have to be the middle finger, I've seen other guys hold it in the index finger. :)

I use thumb and finger picks with acoustic instruments, and bare fingers with electric guitars.

im way more comfortable with playing with my fingers but the loss of attack on the strings with a pick always brings me to the pick
