Hi guys,
I am upgrading my Epi les paul custom, and wanted to get a new brass nut.
My question is which one should I order? A 42 mm or a 43mm.
Thanks a lot,
Niv

Nope. Just heard the epi's nut is plastic and wanted to change that. the brass looks cool with the gold hardware of the custom.
Is that only for slide players?

I just ordered a TUSQ XL nut for my epi trad pro. I have used Tusq on all of my guitars and it sounds great and is very easy to work with. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the reply. But the brand of the nut is not my concern, just wondering what will fit my guitar. the 43 or the 42.
Im sorry if thats a dumb question and they both fit the same...

What I would do is take a ruler and measure the nut. After you have the measurements convert it to millimeters and go from there.

Did the conversion. If your nut is 1-11/16" it converts to 42.8625mm. You may need the 43mm nut. If you get the 43mm nut there may be a bit of filing you may need to do.

+1 for Graphtech Tusq XL

Smac, where you at? Glen Cove here.

Just realized what you were asking. I'm in Medford. I live less than a mile away from the boarder between Medford and Patchogue.

Ok. Just measured it... exactly 42mm... I live in Europe so no inches for me.
But, why the guy from before asked if I play slide guitar? Will a brass nut be different tone wise to a bone nut?

I was kinda figuring tht when you said themeasurement in mm. Thats also why I included the converted measurment. It's annoying on why the U.S. hasn't converted to the metric system even thought they tried. Since I work on cars everything on the is metric so luckly I'm able to do the conversions.

It will be very slightly different on the open strings. once you fret a string then the nut is mostly out of the equation

I swapped mine out for a Graphtec. The Epi nut wasn't half bad actually.

The Graphtec stays in tune a little better imo. Other than that, don't get too excited about nuts. Vintage "holy grail" guitars had nylon (like cutting board material).
