I want to put Grover locking tuners on my Les Paul Studio. Grover has two different kinds. Please let me know if you have any experience with either one of them and which one you would recommend me to get. I'm looking more from the reliability perspective, rather than aesthetics.

Roto-Grip with thumbscrew on the bottom:

or

Automatic-locking with a taller post:

Thanks!

Well... They both are pretty much equally reliable as in not breaking...

However.. The thumbscrew models are a more "positive" lock and personally i like them better. The auto locks where the post has a cam work well, but they can be a bit clunky to get going.

My biggest beef with them in all honesty is that they don't come in nickel :/

for that reason Ive never tried them before.

I'm asking about reliability because of this recent post - http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/gib...grover-locking-tuner-problem-please-help.html - so I wonder if the auto locking one will be less prone to this problem.

I much prefer the auto-lock type. I use them frequently and they're my go-to suggestion when taking commissioned builds. Once you feed the string through the post, they're no different in operation than traditional tuners.

The thumb screw version seems bulky and cumbersome IMO. If a customer really wants thumbscrews, I'll certainly install them - but I'll suggest Sperzels over Grover in that case.

forget the Grovers, or the Sperzels

Hipshot Locking tuners beat'em both by a mile and have more original looking key heads too.

this can happen to ANY of the "plunger" style locking tuners.. you just need to use a short piece of .016 ga string to push upward and inward until you get the plunger to drop down.

not hard at all. its just that few people bother to do the "upward" thing.

If you're choosing between Grovers I'd vote for the thumbscrew locks, those are the only locking Grovers I've used but they're great.

Thanks all, I've just ordered the Grovers with the thumbscrew locks.

Ultimately, I compared the dimensions of the two with standard Grover tuners, and the one with the thumbscrew lock more closely matches the standard Grover.

Also, the peg hole is more than 4mm higher on the auto-locking tuners, which means a smaller break angle for the strings from the headstock. Hence I chose the one with the thumbscrew lock.

Gibson used the Grover Roto-Grip's but with keystone buttons on the Traditonal Pro. I really like them, but unfortunately I don't think you can buy them.
