Well put. The way I look at it is, " Sex, fame, drugs, ect. are only short term. Music or art as you call it lasts forever if its worth anything and has integrity. So why not work on the latter and if all the excess comes with it then fine. If not then fine as well."

Sure. I see your point.

My assertion is that there have been some who've come into the business with the mindset of becoming rich and famous, and made some fine music along the way. Admittedly, that doesn't happen a lot these days, but one doesn't necessarily preclude the other. And there's lots of "art" out there that deserves to stay underground - waaayyy underground. There's stuff out there that sounds more like somebody trying to fry a cat than music...

You are so right. Just because you have "noble' intentions it doesn't mean you write good music. A big ego helps to sustain musicians on the road. Believe in the ART not the ARTIST. I do believe that even "sh@T-heads" that are in it for the wrong reasons can still Rock! When my band was in their prime(92):laugh2:. I proclaimed us underground. I would have sold-out in a minute, we were underground because we couldn't get gigs. I would have taken "evil corporate" money in a heart-beat. I wanted to play to the most people I could .A "big" show for us was 40 pimply bored kids:dude:

Yup, this is what real rock is about: you might get some art-school geeks thinking they know better than anyone else how to make you move you ass, or you might get some ghetto punks who wanted nothing more that a 20-bill to tide them over on a Friday night.

I personally think that any ****ing idiot who gets up onstage with a piece wood and wire on him is half-way there already, and the only thing that might keep him from being 100% RnR is not being able to fight his way out.

Ever done a gig where the drunks are unhappy, and you gotta sling your guitar over your shoulder, ready to clock someone? Well, you're rock'n'roll in my book, from there on out.

I took an extra guitar to DJs on the east end of Ventura, by Saticoy, gang country, because I figured I might have to sacrifice one. I was playing bass on that gig. :)

Is it still Rock N Roll if you show up at a bar that asked you to play and ends up being a gay bar? Happened to my friends.

that was the 80'..we are more aware of serious diseases now.. :fingersx:

Pfft! We didn't have serious diseases in the 80's; AIDS was something that only gay Haitian men got back then. Man, it must really suck to be in your sexual prime in this day and age.

Let's just say that there were lots of potential stage climbers that ended up getting a kick in the chest or face. I also have Fender Jazz bass with teeth marks in it.

Another fun fact: Did you know that a K&M mic stand with the legs taped makes a REALLY good weapon in a pinch?

Like I posted in a thread months ago, anybody who dressed like we did in the '80s (Spandex, eyeliner, legwarmers), playing to rooms full of John Deere caps and Harley T-shirts, still managed to snag local pussy and rode them bareback - and survived - is pretty much rock & roll... :)

Here is something you can't understand ...

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRYTlDDifik"]YouTube - Rage Against The Machine - How I Could Just Kill A Man[/ame]

Rock stars talk about killing, but the only thing they kill is ... themselves or their careers. LOL. Producers are a different story. Phil Spector's sentence for 2nd degree murder was upheld recently. Appeal failed. That is so righteous, brother!

I always feel alittle angry on stage. I'm usually playing in sports bars or metal clubs. I have always fronted power trios. People like to heckle trios. I love hecklers. My guitar style is a punch in the face. Very atonal and bristling. I have yet to play out as a duo. I can't wait. It is going to be wild playing leads with just drums behind me. I might have my friend as a "plant' in the audience. I might have him curse me and throw a ham or melon at me. I really do want to cut my forehead ala a pro wrestler for my final song. I will if there are at least 50 people. My wife thinks I'm nuts. She is right! Here is Mr. Flair wearing the "crimson mask". You have to bleed for the belt!

I live in a city of like a million bars and there only on bar to play at unless you're a pop, rock, alternative,or rap group then you can play at plenty of places. But this one bar is like our own CBGBs. It's full of underground raw in your face rock n roll, hardcore, punk, and metal. But there are americana type bands that play that are part of the rock n roll and punk scene. They have their own PA which is always good thing. Just being your amps, guitars and drums. It doesn't matter if you lack some talent. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgj1ohiyPUk[/ame]

The song fits this video perfectly. YouTube - HELLS ANGELS ON WHEELS

They get it - dangerous and sexy. For Rock and Roll music, the best kind of dangerous IS sexy. (Ask the girl who dances when she knows the bad boys are watching) You need both because you need the chicks to dig it. Because watching that girl 'dance dangerously' is more interesting to the bad boys than anything we can do on stage. (and becasue sexy without dangerous is R&B or soul or whatever; which is fine, but it ain't rock and roll music.)

GG went nowhere because he had no female fans. The Clash and the Ramones had plenty of them and were huge. Girls want to shake it. If we don't give them something to shake to, the hip hop club on the next block over will. And the boys will go where the girls are, even to the discos.

Shocking can be OK: the Coop had the right kind of tension in "be my lover" or "Under my Wheels" and he was plenty shocking. The Doors had it. Zeppelin had it. INXS had it, the Stones always had it. Really heavy bands like AC/DC and Judas Priest can have it, and George Thorogood and the Stray Cats can have it.

A lot of the "dangerous" stuff in this thread doesn't have it - sexual tension, or simple danceability (which lets the ladies provide the tension regardless of what's going on in the song)

That's why rock is in the doldrums. The chicks are listening to techno, hip hop or country.

I seen Hells Angels on Wheels a couple months ago on tv really late at night. That was the first time I heard Saxon- Stallions of The Highway.
