It's baking day again, The rolls have reversed here lately! My missus is painting & decorating the bedroom & stripping wallpaper off, Jobs I hate. I said I'll go do the BIG SHOP down the supermarket & get some baking done.

Thank YOU on this Thanksgiving. It's a great point....the world is so full of resentful, ungrateful people who only see what's wrong. Yet they don't ever think about the absolute miracle that they are warm in their homes, that the lights turn on when they flip a switch, or that their endless excrement gets flushed away though the plumbing.

On a few trips, I spent some time shooting pictures of the Milky Way.
One trip to visit my parents and then visit Carlsbad Caverns on the way home, we planned the trip so the Milky Way would be at a good elevation well before midnight.
Figured the area around Carlsbad would be great.
Got everything set up and headed out into the darkness.... except there was no darkness. The oil fields cast an orange glow on the entire horizon.
We ended up heading up the canyon to the caverns before finding a spot where the mountains blocked the light from the fields, and even then, the shots that I took in western AZ were way better.

That’s a tough way to find out.

All of this area of west Texas and SE New Mexico, as well as the Four Corners, will have those flares going.
If that’s not enough, the “Oh my God” bright lights in the plants and refineries keep the sky lit up.

When they got “modern” and started using LED lighting in these plants, it got absolutely stupid.
Years ago, the plants that used the orange mercury vapor lighting were not as much of an eyesore, and they were a hell of a lot easier to work in.

Arizona kept a handle on that crap.
Night skies are wonderful.

Probably out of your way, but the Fort Davis Mountains and the Big Bend area of Texas would’ve been good.
The rest of the entire damn state?
Not so much.

The most brilliant stars I’ve ever seen were up in the mountains in northern Arizona.
North rim of the Grand Canyon.

I’m sure it stays that way up through the higher elevations of the Rockies.

I took those pictures at one of the overlooks at a local park. I managed to walk a mile to the overlook and a mile back to the car despite the hip surgery. The pain may not be going away, but the use of my leg is coming back.
