Opening riff to Smoke on the water, I'm sure it was the same day I got the guitar.

I wasn't supposed to learn guitar, my older sister was. My folks paid for her lessons but they didn't think I would stick with it. So I would sneak in her room and practice chords from the lesson sheets she was given on her guitar. One day she brought home the chord sheet for Proud Mary. I knew how to play the chords but I didn't know the song. So one day we went to a store, and I saw an album called Creedence Gold by Creedence Clearwater Revival. It had Proud Mary listed on it and I somehow talked my parents into buying it for me (this was my first album). So at 8 years old I learned Proud Mary first and then worked my way through all of the other songs playing by ear. I still have that album and enjoy it from time to time. Funny thing is after all these years I'm still playing and my sister stopped probably 25 years ago. So much for not sticking with it :rofl::rofl:

Been playing for 3 months now. Learned bits Sunshine Of Your Love, Sweet Dreams, few more. The only song I've stuck with long enough to sort of play all the way though is Jailbreak. Still need to learn how to tune half step down though.

I had lessons, started learning like "Row Your Boat", said to hell with it, fired the chick and learned "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" by Metallica.

More Than A Feeling, followed by Smoke On The Water...

Great thread.

BB :)
I think that's exactly what I started off with, too! I had to learn "More Than a Feeling" simply because it sounded so cool. I loved the sound of the main riff with the fret-hand muting. I only had an acoustic so I ached for an electric so I could get "that sound." Eventually I figured it out and away I went.

First would be the basic "boogie woogie" pattern (walking bass line) that my granddad taught me.

Chord-wise I remember learning the chords to Free Bird early on. Also the chords to Hatchet's version of Dreams I'll Never See was one I worked on pretty early on.
