Unusual as it may be, I learned smoke on the water about half a year after I started, I just never took the time.
My first one was ' Twist n' Shout ' , from this Beatles anthology my dad aways kept on.
He would spend like a few hours a day, because I couldn't seem to memorize it , lol.

After reading about the complexity of some of the songs you guys first learned I admit I'm a little emabarrassed.... first song "Helpless" Neil Young, simple 3 chorder, taught me timing and hand position switching.

Hey, after "Here Comes The Sun", "Helpless" was the other one I was learning at the same time. A lot less complicated for sure, but great as you say for learning timing and positioning.
Playing Helpless, I also learned I could not sing while playing, or at least the noises I made were not worth hearing:rofl:

I remember playing Revele for my grade 5 class in '65/'66. I don't remember my first rock tune but among the first were:

House of the Rising Sun - The Animals
Laughing - The Guess Who
I'm So Glad - Cream
Crimson & Clover - Tommy James & The Shondells
