Unusual as it may be, I learned smoke on the water about half a year after I started, I just never took the time. My first one was ' Twist n' Shout ' , from this Beatles anthology my dad aways kept on. He would spend like a few hours a day, because I couldn't seem to memorize it , lol.

Hey, after "Here Comes The Sun", "Helpless" was the other one I was learning at the same time. A lot less complicated for sure, but great as you say for learning timing and positioning. Playing Helpless, I also learned I could not sing while playing, or at least the noises I made were not worth hearing
